Lady Cougars Open Tournament with Pair of
Wins

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (10-1-2010) - The Mount
Vernon Nazarene University women's
volleyball team got its own tournament off
to a successful start as the Lady Cougars
defeated Marian (Ind.) University and Union
(Ky.) College on Friday night in the MVNU
Invitational held in the Physical Education
Center.
The Lady Cougars (23-2) got off to a slow
start in the first match of the night
against the Lady Knights of Marian (6-11).
After dropping the first set 25-22, MVNU
fell behind 23-19 in the second set before
rallying to score the final six points to
post a 25-23 victory and then downing the
Lady Knights 25-18, 25-15 to close out the
match.
Senior middle hitter Jackie Albrecht
(left) led the
Lady Cougars with 17 kills, 14 digs, and two
blocks, while freshman outside hitter Kendra Votaw pounded 15 kills. Sophomore setter
Lauren Percival handed out 48 assists to go
with 12 digs, and senior libero Caitlin
Myles and sophomore right-side hitter Kaylee
Hewitt posted 17 and 16 digs respectively.
Senior middle hitter Sarah Yutzy added 10
kills and two blocks, and Haley Nofziger
also hammered seven kills.
MVNU used the momentum from that win to
propel the Lady Cougars to a 25-15, 25-19,
25-12 sweep of Union (Ky.) College (9-9) in
the second match of the night. Albrecht led
MVNU with 12 kills, while Yutzy (nine
kills), Votaw (eight kills), and Nofziger
(seven kills) all contributed to the Lady
Cougars' attack. Percival handed out 31
assists to go with a team-best 22 digs, and
Myles and Hewitt tallied 15 and 12 digs
respectively.
In other action on Friday night, Union
(Tenn.) University went 2-0 with a 25-21,
25-21, 25-13 sweep of Union (Ky.) and then a
come-from-behind 18-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-12
victory over Marian.
MVNU will take on Roberts Wesleyan (N.Y.)
College at 10 a.m. on Saturday and then
close out the tournament against Union
(Tenn.) at 2 p.m. Marian and Union (Ky.)
will square off at noon, while Union (Tenn.)
and Roberts Wesleyan will also play at noon.
