AMHERST, N.Y. (9-25-2010) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's volleyball team got off to a good start in the American Mideast Conference portion of the team's 2010 schedule as the Lady Cougars defeated both Daemen (N.Y.) College and Carlow (Pa.) University in a conference tri-match at Daemen on Saturday afternoon.

MVNU (20-2, 2-0 AMC) began the day with the match against the host Wildcats (6-11, 0-1 AMC) and the Lady Cougars were in for a battle. In a match that was close throughout, MVNU prevailed 26-24, 25-20, 24-26, 25-21. Senior middle hitter Jackie Albrecht led the way with 19 kills and four blocks, while freshman outside hitter Kendra Votaw and senior middle hitter Sarah Yutzy added 13 and 12 kills respectively and three blocks apiece. Sophomore setter Lauren Percival handed out 44 assists to go with three aces and 17 digs, and senior libero Caitlin Myles had 25 digs and two aces. Sophomore right-side hitter Kaylee Hewitt contributed 24 digs, while sophomore outside hitter Haley Nofziger (left) posted four blocks.

The Lady Cougars closed out the day by sweeping Carlow (9-7, 0-2 AMC) 25-11, 25-12, 25-13 as everyone was able to get into the action for MVNU. Albrecht again paced the team with 12 kills, three aces, and three blocks, while Votaw and Nofziger smashed eight and seven kills respectively. Percival handed out 35 more assists, and Myles posted a team-leading 13 digs.

"We were fortunate to get a win against Daemen,” said MVNU coach Paul Swanson. "They are a dangerous team and they had us on the ropes in the first set. We were able to find a way to win it and then the second set, and then after a close third set we prevailed in the fourth set. We have to be more consistent and continue to improve.”

"It was nice to be able to play everyone in the match against Carlow,” Swanson added. "Everyone on the team works hard and it was great to be able to get them all on the court today. It was also nice to start off conference play with a couple of wins.”

The Lady Cougars' next seven matches will all be at home before spending nearly a month on the road. Next up for MVNU is a non-conference match against Urbana University that will begin at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in the Physical Education Center.
