MARION, Ind. (9-17-2010) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's volleyball team opened up play in the nine-team Indiana Wesleyan University Wildcat Classic with a come-from-behind win over Saint Xavier (Ill.) University and a sweep of Trinity International (Ill.) University as the Lady Cougars extended their winning streak to 16 straight matches on Friday evening.

In a meeting of two teams who both received votes in the latest NAIA poll, MVNU (16-1) dropped the first set to Saint Xavier (8-5) but then rattled off three straight wins to post a 22-25, 25-12, 25-20, 25-21 victory in the Lady Cougars' tournament opener. Senior middle hitter Sarah Yutzy (left) led MVNU with 15 kills and seven blocks, while senior middle hitter Jackie Albrecht pounded 14 kills. Sophomore setter Lauren Percival handed out 44 assists and posted 20 digs, and freshman outside hitter Kendra Votaw smashed 11 kills to go with three blocks. Senior libero Caitlin Myles led the team with a career-high 37 digs, while sophomore right-side hitter Kaylee Hewitt served up two aces.

MVNU kept its momentum going in the second match of the day as the Lady Cougars swept Trinity International (9-6) by the scores of 25-12, 25-18, 25-21. Albrecht led MVNU against the Trojans with 13 kills, while Votaw added nine kills and two blocks. Percival handed out 23 assists to go with 18 digs, and Myles added 19 digs of her own. Yutzy also tallied a team-leading six blocks.

"We did a nice job of bouncing back against Saint Xavier after losing the first set,” said MVNU coach Paul Swanson. "I felt like we really played with a purpose and we were much more consistent over the final three sets. We continued to play well in the first two sets versus Trinity International. The third set was a combination of them playing really well and us not being as consistent, but we were fortunate to get the job done. We'll have two more tough matches on Saturday.”

The Lady Cougars will return to action on Saturday at 12:15 p.m. against Cornerstone (Mich.) University and then close out the tournament with a 2:30 p.m. match against host Indiana Wesleyan.
