Lady Cougars Keep on Winning with Two More Sweeps

LATROBE, Pa. (9-4-2010) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's volleyball team kept right on winning on Saturday as the Lady Cougars swept a pair of matches from Carlow (Pa.) University and the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford (Pa.) at the St. Vincent (Pa.) College Bearcat Classic as MVNU extended its winning streak to 12 straight matches.

The Lady Cougars (12-1) began the day by sweeping Carlow 25-6, 25-18, 25-19 behind nine kills, three blocks, and two aces from senior middle hitter Jackie Albrecht. Senior middle hitter Sarah Yutzy (left) added eight kills and two blocks, and freshman outside hitter Kendra Votaw pounded six kills. Senior libero Caitlin Myles posted 11 digs, and sophomore setter Lauren Percival handed out 33 assists to go with nine digs. Sophomore right-side hitter Kaylee Hewitt also served up a team-high four aces.

MVNU closed out play at the nine-team tournament by sweeping Pittsburgh-Bradford 25-15, 25-12, 25-14. Yutzy had a big match with 14 kills and seven blocks, while Albrecht and sophomore outside hitter Haley Nofziger each pounded seven kills with Albrecht adding three blocks and two aces. Percival handed out 35 assists to go with 11 digs, and Myles registered 13 digs and three aces. Votaw finished with six kills, while Hewitt tallied three blocks.

"It was nice to play well and keep the momentum going,” said MVNU coach Paul Swanson. "We were able to get everyone in on the action this weekend. We need to continue to build off each performance and work to get better.”

For their efforts over the two days of the tournament, Albrecht, Percival, and Hewitt were named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Lady Cougars will return to action on Thursday when MVNU will host NAIA No. 19 Shawnee State University in a non-conference match at 7 p.m. That match in the Physical Education Center will be the team's home opener.
