The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s
volleyball team swept Kenyon College on
Thursday evening in Tomsich Arena by the
scores of 25-10, 25-22, 25-13 to take the
non-conference match between the two Knox
County schools.
Sophomore
middle hitter Gina Porto led the Lady
Cougars (14-4) with nine kills and six
blocks, while junior outside hitter Jackie
Albrecht added nine kills and two blocks.
Senior right-side hitter Courtney Springer
and junior middle hitter Sarah Yutzy
(left) smashed seven kills apiece
with Yutzy posting six blocks and Springer
adding three blocks, while senior setter
Kaylin Austen handed out 22 assists and
served up two aces. Junior libero Caitlin
Myles tallied a team-high 12 digs, and
freshman setter Lauren Percival handed out
11 assists.
“It was nice to get everyone involved in
this win,” said MVNU coach Paul Swanson, who
posted win No. 899 in his illustrious
career. “(Kenyon) played really well in the
second set and was up 22-19. After a
timeout, we came out and scored the final
six points to take the set. Then, we closed
things out in the third set.”
The Lady Cougars will be off until next
Thursday when MVNU will travel to Urbana
University for another non-conference match
that will start at 7:00 p.m. Swanson, a
member of the NAIA Hall of Fame, will be
looking to become the first coach in NAIA
women’s volleyball history to record 900
wins. He current overall record stands at
899-317 (.739 winning percentage) in 27
years at the NAIA level - 26 seasons of
which have come with the Lady Cougars.
