The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University women’s volleyball team had its
five-match winning streak snapped by host
NAIA No. 6 Georgetown (Ky.) College, but the
Lady Cougars bounced back to defeat Calumet
College of Saint Joseph (Ind.) in action at
the Tiger Invitational on Saturday.
In
the first match, No. 25 MVNU (12-4) was just
not quite able to get over the hump against
the undefeated host Tigers (11-0) as
Georgetown prevailed 25-18, 25-17, 25-23.
Sophomore middle hitter Gina Porto
(left) led the Lady Cougars with 11
kills, while junior outside hitter Jackie
Albrecht added nine kills. Senior setter
Kaylin Austen handed out 23 assists with
four aces, and junior libero Caitlin Myles
and freshman right-side hitter Kaylee Hewitt
posted 16 and 12 digs respectively.
"(Georgetown) is a very good team,” said
MVNU coach Paul Swanson. "They were tough in
the back line and served very well. We just
did not execute well enough in this match to
win against a very good team.”
The Lady Cougars responded well from the
loss with a 25-4, 25-11, 25-16 sweep of
Calumet-Saint Joseph as junior middle hitter
Sarah Yutzy and senior outside hitter Julie
Haumschild pounded 11 and 10 kills
respectively. Porto added a team-high four
blocks, while Myles and freshman setter
Lauren Percival each finished with 10 digs
apiece with Percival also handing out 15
assists. Austen tallied 11 assists in just
one set, and Yutzy and Hewitt served up four
and three aces respectively.
"I was very pleased with the way that we
responded in this match,” said Swanson.
"Obviously, we were disappointed with our
loss to Georgetown, but we talked about how
we need to be ready to play regardless of
our opponent. I thought that we played with
a lot of enthusiasm and consistency in this
match.”
For their efforts, Porto and Albrecht
were named to the All-Tournament Team for
the Lady Cougars.
MVNU will return to action on Tuesday
when the Lady Cougars will travel to Denison
University for a non-conference match that
will begin at 7:00 p.m.
