The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University women’s volleyball team got off
to a good start at the Tiger Invitational
hosted by Georgetown (Ky.) College on Friday
night as the NAIA No. 25 Lady Cougars held
off Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) University
25-19, 23-25, 25-15, 15-25, 15-8 to extend
the team’s winning streak to five straight
matches.
Junior
outside hitter Jackie Albrecht led MVNU
(11-3) with 17 kills and tied her career
high with 28 digs against the Lady Trojans
(5-3), while sophomore middle hitter Gina
Porto added 15 kills and six blocks. Junior
middle hitter Sarah Yutzy finished with
eight kills and a career-high 10 blocks, and
senior setter Kaylin Austen (left)
registered 46 assists, two aces, and a
career-high 26 digs. Junior libero Caitlin
Myles posted a season-high 30 digs, while
freshmen Kaylee Hewitt and Lauren Percival
tallied 15 and 11 digs respectively. Senior
outside hitter Julie Haumschild also
contributed a career-high six blocks.
“We were able to be just consistent
enough to win tonight,” said MVNU coach Paul
Swanson. “(Trevecca Nazarene) played very
well and gave us a great battle, but we also
need to be a little sharper in the back row.
Jackie and Gina attacked the ball well
tonight, and Kaylin had a very good
all-around match.”
The Lady Cougars will be in for a big
challenge on Saturday morning when MVNU will
take on host Georgetown, who is ranked No. 6
in the latest NAIA poll, at 10:00 a.m. This
will be the third team ranked in the Top 10
that the Lady Cougars will have faced
already this season with MVNU posting a 1-1
record in those match-ups so far. The Lady
Cougars will then close out the tournament
at noon against Calumet College of Saint
Joseph (Ind.).
