The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University women’s volleyball team got
everyone into the action on Saturday as the
Lady Cougars swept non-conference matches
from Ohio State University-Newark and
Marygrove (Mich.) College in the Physical
Education Center.
In
the first match of the day, MVNU (9-3) took
care of Ohio State-Newark by the scores of
25-12, 25-15, 25-6. Junior outside hitter
Jackie Albrecht led the Lady Cougars with
eight kills and 10 digs, while sophomore
middle hitter Gina Porto and junior middle
hitter Sarah Yutzy each pounded seven kills
apiece with Yutzy registering a team-high
five blocks. Freshman setter Lauren Percival
(left) handed out 17 assists,
while senior setter Kaylin Austen had 14
assists in just one set. Junior libero
Caitlin Myles also led the team with 17 digs
and four aces while also serving for 17
straight points in the third set as MVNU
jumped out to an 18-0 lead.
After Ohio State-Newark out-lasted
Marygrove 25-19, 23-25, 25-23, 20-25, 15-13
in the second match of the day, it was the
Lady Cougars’ turn to take on the Mustangs.
MVNU downed Marygrove 25-3, 25-11, 25-13
behind nine kills from senior outside hitter
Julie Haumschild. Yutzy added eight kills,
while Porto finished with seven kills and
three blocks. Myles posted 12 digs, and
Percival handed out 22 more assists.
“It was really nice to get everyone
involved in the action today,” said MVNU
coach Paul Swanson. “Regardless of who you
are playing, it is important to continue to
work on improving. I was pleased with our
effort and performance today.”
The Lady Cougars will return to action on
Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. when MVNU will host
Ohio Dominican University in a
non-conference match in the Physical
Education Center. This will be the team’s
last home match until October 2-3 when the
Lady Cougars will host their annual
tournament.
