The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University women’s volleyball team extended
its winning streak to 13 straight matches as
the Lady Cougars posted a 25-15, 25-13,
24-26, 25-11 American Mideast Conference
victory at Ursuline College on Thursday
night.
Freshman
middle hitter Gina Porto (left)
and sophomore middle hitter Jackie Albrecht
both pounded 16 kills to lead MVNU (32-7,
10-3 AMC) with Albrecht adding 13 digs and
two aces. Junior right-side hitter Courtney
Springer finished with 14 kills and 24 digs,
and junior setter Kaylin Austen handed out
55 assists with 13 digs. Sophomore middle
hitter Sarah Yutzy contributed nine kills,
two aces, and two blocks, while sophomore
libero Caitlin Myles and freshman outside
hitter Cieleste Rose registered 20 and 14
digs respectively.
“(Ursuline) made us earn points tonight
and they played really well in the third
set,” said MVNU coach Paul Swanson,
referring to the set that the Arrows (11-21,
2-11 AMC) won to snap the Lady Cougars’
consecutive sets won streak at 31 in a row.
“However, we bounced back and regained
control in the fourth set to post another
important conference road win.”
MVNU will now take the weekend off before
closing out the regular season next Tuesday
at home against Malone University at 7:00
p.m. in conference play. A win for the Lady
Cougars would guarantee them no worse than
the No. 2 seed in the upcoming AMC
Tournament. MVNU will also honor Audrey
Hickinbotham, the team’s lone senior, prior
to the start of the Malone match.
