The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University women’s volleyball team extended
its winning streak to five straight matches
as the Lady Cougars swept an important
American Mideast Conference match at Ohio
Dominican University on Tuesday night by the
scores of 25-20, 25-20, 25-23.
Junior
right-side hitter Courtney Springer led MVNU
(24-7, 6-3 AMC) with 12 kills and three
blocks, while sophomore middle hitter Jackie
Albrecht added 11 kills and 15 digs. Junior
setter Kaylin Austen handed out 42 assists
as she ran the balanced hitting attack, and
senior outside hitter Audrey Hickinbotham
and freshman middle hitter Gina Porto
pounded 10 and nine kills respectively with
Hickinbotham tallying 13 digs. Sophomore
defensive specialist Caitlin Myles
(left) also matched her career-high
with a team-leading 20 digs.
“This was an important conference win on
the road,” said MVNU coach Paul Swanson.
“(Ohio Dominican) really played good defense
and challenged us, especially in the third
set when they were up 23-22 before we scored
the final three points to end the match. We
had good balance from our hitters and Kaylin
did a good job distributing the ball.”
The Lady Cougars will return to action on
Friday when MVNU will travel to Geneva (Pa.)
College for the National Christian College
Athletic Association East Region Tournament.
The Lady Cougars will get the two-day,
five-team event under way at 6:00 p.m.
against Roberts Wesleyan (N.Y.) College and
will then take on Nyack (N.Y.) College at
8:00 p.m. Then, on Saturday, MVNU will
square off with Geneva at 11:00 a.m. and
Malone University at 1:00 p.m. The winner of
the tournament receives an automatic berth
in the NCCAA National Tournament to take
place at Colorado Christian University the
first weekend in December.
