The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University women’s volleyball team had its
five-match American Mideast Conference
winning streak snapped on Tuesday night as
the Lady Cougars fell 25-19, 25-22, 25-11 in
conference play at NAIA No. 25 Walsh
University.
Sophomore
middle hitter Jackie Albrecht pounded 11
kills to lead MVNU (19-7, 5-3 AMC), which
received votes in the latest NAIA poll that
came out on Tuesday afternoon. Freshman
middle hitter Gina Porto (left)
added eight kills and four blocks, while
junior right-side hitter Courtney Springer
finished with six kills, two aces, and four
blocks. Junior setter Kaylin Austen handed
out 29 assists, and sophomore libero Caitlin
Myles and senior outside hitter Audrey
Hickinbotham posted 10 and nine digs
respectively. The Lady Cougars hit just .250
for the match while the host Lady Cavaliers
(15-8, 5-0 AMC) posted a .447 attack
percentage.
“We got a lesson in how to be effective
at the service line tonight,” said MVNU
coach Paul Swanson as the Lady Cougars
allowed nine aces as the result of nine
serve reception errors. “We did a good job
in the second set to battle back from an
11-1 early deficit to pull within 24-22
before falling, but on the whole we were
just not consistent enough to get it done
tonight.”
MVNU will regroup and turn its focus to
the five-team Papa John’s Invitational that
will take place on Friday and Saturday in
the Physical Education Center. On Friday,
the Lady Cougars will take on St. Catharine
(Ky.) College at 4:00 p.m. and Lindsey
Wilson (Ky.) College at 8:00 p.m.
