The long drive to Houghton (N.Y.) College
was worth it for the Mount Vernon Nazarene
University women’s volleyball team as the
visiting Lady Cougars swept the host
Highlanders 25-17, 25-18, 26-24 in American
Mideast Conference action on Friday
afternoon.
Junior
right-side hitter Courtney Springer
(left) led MVNU (18-6, 4-2 AMC) with
nine kills and 13 digs as she became the
23rd player in school history to top the
1,000-dig mark in a career. Meanwhile,
freshman middle hitter Gina Porto pounded
eight kills to go with a career-high three
aces, and junior setter Kaylin Austen handed
out 32 assists. Sophomore middle hitters
Jackie Albrecht and Sarah Yutzy both
contributed seven kills and four blocks
apiece with Albrecht adding eight digs,
while senior outside hitter Audrey
Hickinbotham served up a team-high four aces
to go along with eight digs.
“It was nice to come out and sweep
another conference match,” said MVNU coach
Paul Swanson. “However, we need to continue
to improve in the back row and I know that
we can play better than we did today. After
taking the first two sets, we had a nice
comeback in the third set to rally from
23-18 down to finish off the match. Kaylin
set a very nice match, but we must do a
better job of passing the ball to her to
make her job easier.”
The Lady Cougars will wrap up their trip
on Saturday at noon when MVNU travels to
Roberts Wesleyan (N.Y.) College for another
conference match.
