Cougars Blank Georgetown 1-0 in
Non-Conference Action written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (9-11-2012) - The Mount
Vernon Nazarene University men's soccer team
got a goal early in the second half and the
defense made it stand up as the Cougars
blanked Georgetown (Ky.) College 1-0 in
non-conference action at Cougar Field on
Tuesday afternoon.
After a scoreless
first half in which MVNU (2-3-1) out-shot
the visiting Tigers 7-4, the Cougars
dominated Georgetown (0-5) in shots in the
second half 10-0 to finish with a 17-4
advantage for the match. MVNU also led 5-1
in corner kicks and 6-3 in shots on goal.
The lone goal of the match came in the
53rd minute when senior forward Brian Petak
slipped a pass to junior midfielder Marc
Cannon for a shot from point blank range
that he fired into the back of the net to
give the Cougars a 1-0 advantage. It was the
first goal of the season for Cannon and the
first assist of the year for Petak.
From there, the defense and senior
goalkeeper Trevor Stewart took over to post
the shutout as MVNU did not allow a shot in
the second half. Stewart posted three saves
as the Cougars notched their first shutout
of the season as he lowered his goals
against average to 0.81. Georgetown goalie
Stefan Iverson stopped four shots for the
Tigers, who also had one non-goalie save.
"We started the match by dictating how
we wanted to play and created some good
chances but were not able to finish," said
MVNU coach Andrew Belleman. "We let down at
the end of the first half, but then regained
control early in the second half and scored
a nice goal. We finished by creating more
chances and keeping possession to kill the
match."
"This is a good step in the
right direction and we will need to be ready
for two matches this weekend," Belleman
added.
The Cougars will return to
action on Friday with another non-conference
match that will kick off at the College of
Wooster at 3 p.m. Then, MVNU will travel to
Knox County rival Kenyon College on Saturday
for a 3 p.m. start.
