Cougars Battle Judson to 1-1 Double
Overtime Draw
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (9-8-2012) - The Mount
Vernon Nazarene University men's soccer team
battled Judson (Ill.) University to a 1-1
double overtime draw in the final match of
the First-Knox Cougar Invitational on
Saturday afternoon at Cougar Field.
MVNU (1-3-1) got on the scoreboard first in
the 17th minute of the match when sophomore
defender Collin Riley's long flip throw-in
was bouncing around in the box and sophomore
forward Kwaku Frimpong ripped a shot into
the back of the net to give the Cougars the
early 1-0 lead. The goal was Frimpong's
first goal of the season.
Then, in
the 31st minute, the visiting Eagles (2-3-1)
equalized when Santiago Munoz out-raced the
MVNU defense on a breakaway attempt as he
knotted the score at 1-1.
That would
prove to be all the scoring in the match,
though, as the teams played the next 59
minutes of regulation and two 10-minute
golden goal overtime periods without another
score. Both teams finished with 11 total
shots and five shots on goal, while the
Cougars led 8-4 in corner kicks.
Senior goalkeeper Trevor Stewart posted four
saves in goal for MVNU, while Neil Thompson
from Judson also stopped four shots.
"We started the match well with good
composure, energy, and pressure, and we were
able to create a goal out of it," said MVNU
coach Andrew Belleman. "It was a positive
response from yesterday."
"We battled
in the second half and in overtime with a
couple of good chances to win the match,"
Belleman added. "(Judson) is a very good
team and a great program, so it is a
positive result for us and something to
continue to build off of."
The
Cougars will be back in action at home on
Tuesday at 4 p.m. when MVNU will host
Georgetown (Ky.) College in another
non-conference match at Cougar Field.
