Cougars Fall to Olivet Nazarene 2-0 in
First-Knox Opener written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (9-7-2012) - The Mount
Vernon Nazarene University men's soccer team
dropped a 2-0 decision to Olivet Nazarene
(Ill.) University in the first round of the
First-Knox Cougar Invitational on Friday
afternoon at Cougar Field.
Less than
13 minutes into the match, lightning forced
a one-hour delay with the match still
scoreless at that point.
When the
teams returned to the field, the visiting
Tigers (2-1) got on the scoreboard in the
25th minute when Logan Engelkes followed up
an initial shot by Elliot Totsch that was
saved by MVNU junior goalkeeper Ryan
Swartzentruber as Olivet Nazarene took a 1-0
advantage.
The lead grew to 2-0 just
before the half when Engelkes set up the
second goal with a long throw-in that was
headed into the back of the net by Tyler
Gill in the 42nd minute.
Neither team
was able to score the rest of the way
although the Cougars (1-3) did out-shoot the
Tigers 6-5 in the second half. Olivet
Nazarene led 15-10 in shots for the match,
8-1 in shots on goal, and corner kicks were
even at 2-2.
Swartzentruber
registered six saves in goal for MVNU, while
Tim Walker posted a shutout for Olivet
Nazarene as he stopped one shot.
"We
came out flat today and never really got
into a rhythm of how we want to play," said
MVNU coach Andrew Belleman. "We got down
early and never were able to recover. We are
looking forward to another opportunity
tomorrow."
The Cougars will return to
action on Saturday at 4 p.m. when they will
take on Judson (Ill.) University. The Eagles
(2-3) fell 2-1 in Friday's other first round
match against Davenport (Mich.) University
(2-3). Davenport and Olivet Nazarene will
battle for the tournament title on Saturday
at 2 p.m.
