Non-Conference Action
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director
BOXSCORE
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (9-1-2012) - The Mount
Vernon Nazarene University men's soccer team
fell 3-1 in non-conference action at
Davenport (Mich.) University on Saturday
night.
The Panthers (1-2) got on the
scoreboard first in the 15th minute when Jai
Maw gathered an attempted clear by the
Cougars and ripped a shot from 25 yards out
that found the back of the net to give
Davenport an early 1-0 lead.
In the
28th minute, the lead grew to 2-0 when
Stuart Collins scored on a free kick from
just outside the box to extend the Panthers'
lead.
The score remained that way
until the 60th minute when a Davenport
player inadvertently headed a cross from
MVNU into the back of his own net for an own
goal that trimmed the lead to 2-1.
However, the Panthers got the goal back in
the 77th minute when Bernard Brnada headed
in a cross from the corner from J.C. Smith
to push the lead back to 3-1, which would
prove to be the final margin.
"I am
happy with how our young team competed in
the second half," said MVNU coach Andrew
Belleman. "We need to find a way to start
the match with the same energy. We also have
to do a better job defending set pieces. Our
effort was positive and we will keep getting
better."
Davenport held a 16-4
advantage in total shots, a 10-1 margin in
shots on goal, and a 3-0 edge in corner
kicks. Junior goalkeeper Ryan Swartzentruber
and senior goalie Ryan Stewart split the
match in goal for the Cougars and combined
to make seven saves, while Kevin O'Brien
notched the win in goal for the Panthers.
MVNU will return to action on Friday and
Saturday at home when the Cougars will host
the First-Knox Cougar Invitational. The
first match on Friday at 2 p.m. will feature
Davenport versus Judson (Ill.) University
followed by a 4 p.m. meeting between MVNU
and Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) University. Then,
the action will continue on Saturday at 2
and 4 p.m.
