PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (8-29-2012) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men's soccer team posted a 3-1 non-conference victory at Shawnee State University on Wednesday afternoon as the Cougars out-shot the host Bears 22-9 in the contest.

MVNU (1-1) got on the scoreboard in the 13th minute when freshman midfielder Jared Milhoan found the back of the net for his first collegiate goal to put the Cougars on top 1-0.

The score remained that way through halftime with MVNU holding a 9-4 advantage in first-half shots and a 4-1 edge in corner kicks. Then, in the 57th minute, senior forward Brian Petak gave the Cougars a two-goal lead off an assist from sophomore forward Kwaku Frimpong.

That would prove to be an important goal because in the 70th minute Shawnee State (0-2) cut the lead in half when Luke Purpero found the back of the net off a pass from Jacob Hackworth to pull the Bears within 2-1 with plenty of time still left in the match.

However, just over a minute later, MVNU got the goal back when sophomore defender Collin Riley scored off an assist from freshman forward Preston Spurrier to extend the lead to 3-1 with less than 20 minutes to go. That would prove to be all the scoring in the match as the Cougars prevailed.

Senior goalkeeper Trevor Stewart and junior Ryan Swartzentruber combined to record four saves to post the win in goal, while Thomas Carbonari and Cory Wright combined to stop 12 shots in a losing effort for Shawnee State. MVNU held a 22-9 advantage in total shots, a 15-5 edge in shots on goal, and a 7-1 lead in corner kicks.

"We started the match with good defensive pressure and energy and scored early which was a big boost," said MVNU coach Andrew Belleman. "In the second half, we just missed on five or six really good chances. We also did an excellent job killing the match with possession the last 15 minutes. This was a good response after Saturday's loss."

The Cougars will return to action on Saturday when they will travel to Davenport (Mich.) University for a non-conference match that will kick off at 7 p.m.
