Cougars Drop Hard-Fought 2-1 Exhibition
Decision at Ohio State
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director
BOXSCORE
COLUMBUS, Ohio (8-21-2010) - The Mount
Vernon Nazarene University men's soccer team
put up a valiant effort as the Cougars tried
to rally from a two-goal first-half deficit
before falling 2-1 at The Ohio State
University in an exhibition match played
Saturday afternoon at Jesse Owens Memorial
Stadium.
The
defending Big Ten champion Buckeyes took a
1-0 lead in the 19th minute when Chris
Hegngi scored on a penalty kick after he was
taken down in the box by an MVNU defender.
Ohio State increased the lead to 2-0 in the
32nd minute when Sam Scales found the back
of the net from 15 yards out after making an
overlapping run and taking a pass from Omar
Vallejo. That would prove to be the score at
the half as the Buckeyes held a 6-2 edge in
total shots and controlled possession for
the majority of the first 45 minutes.
In the second half, the Cougars proved that
they were up to the task against their
Division I foe. MVNU did a much better job
of possessing the ball in the second half
and did not allow Ohio State a shot on goal
over the final 45 minutes.
With just over 10 minutes left in the match,
the Cougars mounted a nice offensive surge
with several well-placed passes. Senior
defender Kemar Jackson capped off the run
with a cross to junior forward Chris Allen
(left), who fired a shot into
the back of the net as the Jamaican tandem
combined to cut the deficit to 2-1.
MVNU continued to push forward for the
equalizer, but a steady rain from that point
on made the field conditions less than
favorable as the match came to an end with
the Buckeyes clinging to their one-goal
victory.
Ohio State posted a 13-4 advantage in total
shots, a 4-1 edge in shots on goal, and a
4-2 lead in corner kicks. Sophomore Trevor
Stewart, freshman Ryan Swartzentruber, and
senior Tyson Porter each saw time in goal
for the Cougars with Stewart making two
saves in the first half. Matt Lampson, Ryan
Dalton, and Alex Wimmer each saw time in
goal for the Buckeyes.
"We really accomplished some of our
objectives that we had set coming into this
match with the Buckeyes,” said MVNU coach
Paul Furey. "We wanted to play a very good
team that could help show us where we need
to improve. We also wanted to make ourselves
more prepared for the season, and we did a
number of things today that were very
encouraging and that we can definitely grow
from.”
"On the whole, it was a positive day for
us,” Furey continued. "Even though it was
just an exhibition, it really helped prepare
us for what lies ahead as we get into our
season next week. I was encouraged by our
young goalkeepers. I felt like they did a
very good job. Overall, our young players
played well. Our guys never stopped fighting
and battled back to make the match very
interesting as we closed out the 90
minutes.”
"This was a great thing for us to arrange
this exhibition with Ohio State and all the
mystique that goes with it,” said Furey.
"However, at the end of the day, this was
just a scrimmage to help us prepare for the
season.”
The Cougars will get the season under way on
Thursday when MVNU will travel to Grace
(Ind.) College for a non-conference match
that will begin at 3 p.m. | |
