Cougars Fall 3-2 at Davenport in
Non-Conference Match
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director
BOXSCORE
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (8-28-2010) - The Mount
Vernon Nazarene University men's soccer team
fell 3-2 at Davenport (Mich.) University on
Saturday in a non-conference match between
two teams who received votes in the NAIA
preseason poll.
After
a scoreless first half that saw the visiting
Cougars (1-1) hold an 8-5 lead in shots, it
was the host Panthers (3-2) who got on the
scoreboard first less than seven minutes
into the second half when Alex Boehm headed
in a cross from Ryan Duffy-McGirr to give
Davenport a 1-0 lead.
MVNU responded in the 59th minute when
senior defender Kemar Jackson was taken down
in the box by Panthers' goalie Kevin
O'Brien. Senior forward Cody Snouffer
(left) converted the ensuing penalty
kick to knot the match at 1-1. The goal was
Snouffer's second of the year and the 21st
of his career.
Davenport regained the lead in the 68th
minute when Boehm took a touch pass from
Ricco Mulero and scored his second goal of
the match for a 2-1 advantage.
The Cougars equalized in the 81st minute
when Snouffer took a free kick from midfield
that Jackson knocked home for his third goal
of the season and the 10th of his career to
tie things at 2-2. The assist was also the
21st of Snouffer's career as he is now just
two shy of tenth place on the MVNU all-time
assists list.
Unfortunately for the Cougars, the Panthers
would go ahead just over a minute later when
Boehm capped off just the sixth hat trick in
Davenport program history as he beat the
defense for his third goal of the match –
his fifth of the season and third
game-winner – as the Panthers took a 3-2
lead that would stand up for the victory.
Davenport finished with a 15-14 lead in
shots with shots on goal equal at eight
apiece. MVNU led in corner kicks 4-3.
Sophomore goalie Trevor Stewart stopped five
shots for the Cougars, while O'Brien
finished with six saves for the Panthers.
"This was a tough loss for us,” said MVNU
coach Paul Furey. "We really wanted to get
our season started with two victories on the
road. We played what I thought was good
enough to win. We had some great
opportunities to go up early, but we came up
a bit short. Their goalkeeper came up with a
couple of big saves that kept them in it. We
still felt like we had the better run of
play, but we allowed them to stay in it.
They took advantage of the few good scoring
chances that we gave them.”
"Kemar made some big plays for us – making a
great run and getting a penalty kick by
getting taken down in the box which Cody did
a good job of converting,” Furey added.
"Then, Kemar made another great run and
equalized the second time which demonstrated
some good character for us coming back twice
in the match. However, we broke down and let
them come right back again. We need to sort
out a few things, but really overall we are
playing pretty well.”
"Davenport is a good team,” Furey said.
"They are big and physical and they
challenged us in the air. Even though we did
pretty well with it, it was a tough day for
us. We'll look to rebound and come back and
get our home schedule off to a good start on
Friday with our tournament.”
The Cougars will look to bounce back on
Friday when MVNU hosts the annual First-Knox
Cougar Invitational. The first match at 2
p.m. will feature Judson (Ill.) University,
which received votes in the NAIA preseason
poll, versus Spring Arbor (Mich.) University
and then the Cougars will take on
Southeastern (Fla.) University at 4 p.m. The
tournament will conclude on Saturday with
the consolation match at 1 p.m. and the
championship match at 3 p.m. | |
