MVNU Men's Soccer Team Opens 2010
Campaign with 6-0 Win
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director
BOXSCORE
WINONA LAKE, Ind. (8-26-2010) - The Mount
Vernon Nazarene University men's soccer team
used four second-half goals to break open a
non-conference match at Grace (Ind.) College
on Thursday afternoon as the Cougars
prevailed 6-0 to successfully kick off the
2010 season.
Junior midfielder Kyle Maxam got MVNU (1-0)
on the board just over four minutes into the
match when he collected an errant pass from
a Lancer defender and found the back of the
net to put the Cougars up 1-0 as he notched
his fourth career goal.
Then,
in the 34th minute, Maxam helped MVNU extend
its lead to 2-0 when his initial shot was
deflected into the goal by senior forward
Cody Snouffer as Maxam was credited with an
assist on the play. The goal was the 20th in
Snouffer's four-year career.
The score remained that way until early in
the second half when junior forward Chris
Allen scored off a corner kick to push the
lead to 3-0 in the 50th minute. Snouffer and
junior defender Steve Wilging were each
credited with an assist on the play.
The Cougars put the match out of reach with
three goals over the final two minutes as
senior defender Kemar Jackson (left)
scored two of them. The first came on a free
kick from 25 yards out and the second was a
nice give-and-go combination with Allen as
Jackson scored the eighth and ninth goals of
his career.
Allen closed out the scoring in the match in
the 88th minute with his second goal of the
contest and the 17th of his career as
freshman forward Austin Hill laid a pass off
to him and he ripped a shot from 30 yards
out into the upper 90 to cap off the 6-0
win.
Sophomore goalkeeper Trevor Stewart posted
four saves for MVNU as he earned a shutout –
the second of his career – in just his
second career start. Philip Bieri and Ethan
Davis combined to post seven saves for Grace
(0-1). The Cougars held a 24-11 advantage in
total shots, a 13-4 margin in shots on goal,
and an 11-3 edge in corner kicks.
"This is certainly a good start for our
season,” said MVNU coach Paul Furey. "We
really came out and played well right from
the start. We set a tone that we were going
to pressure them and we took advantage of
that when Kyle scored for us. After we went
up 2-0 at the half, we came out knowing that
we wanted to get one more goal at the start
of the second half and not sit on our lead.
Cody did a nice job on the corner kick with
Steve getting the assist on the goal by
Chris.”
"We really moved the ball well today,” Furey
added. "We did a lot of things pretty good
for the first match. Our younger players got
some experience and continued to develop.
They will be a vital part of our success
this season. I was happy for Trevor to get
the shutout in goal. We hope to have that
trend and mentality from past years that we
are a tough team to score on continue. We
didn't give them very many chances.”
The Cougars, who received votes in the NAIA
preseason poll, will return to action on
Saturday at 2 p.m. when MVNU plays at
Davenport (Mich.) University, another team
receiving votes in the NAIA preseason poll.
The Panthers are currently 2-2 after four
road matches with both losses coming by one
goal to No. 17 Auburn University Montgomery
(Ala.) and at Lee (Tenn.) University.
"Saturday will be a tough outing for us at
Davenport,” said Furey. "They've played some
good top 25 teams tough and we'll need to
really be sharp to get a good result from
that match.” | |
