Cougars Set Home Winning Streak Mark with Another Shutout
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director

BOXSCORE

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (9-26-2009) - Although the friendly confines of Cougar Field were quite wet on Saturday afternoon, it did not stop the Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s soccer team from posting another shutout and setting a new school record for most consecutive wins at home as the Cougars prevailed 6-0 in American Mideast Conference action.

MVNU (7-2, 2-0 AMC) came out on the attack right from the kick off of the match. The Cougars needed just 12:46 to get on the scoreboard when sophomore forward Chris Allen sent a cross to junior midfielder Cody Snouffer (left), who found the back of the net to put MVNU in front 1-0. The goal was Snouffer’s third of the season.

Less than seven minutes later, Snouffer scored again to put the Cougars on top 2-0 as he registered his fourth goal of the year. Senior goalkeeper Alex Stout started the play with a long punt that was sent forward on a header by junior midfielder Chris Mast to Snouffer, who then went straight to goal and scored. The assist was the second of Stout’s career with Mast also getting an assist on the play.

Senior forward Scott Forster gave MVNU a 3-0 lead in the 36th minute when he took a pass from junior defender Kemar Jackson and blasted it into the back of the net for his second goal of the season.

The Cougars wasted little time in scoring in the second half when senior midfielder Scott Spangler bent a free kick over the wall and Daemen goalkeeper Jason Hartman to put MVNU in front 4-0 with just 2:40 gone by since halftime.

Less than a minute and a half later, the Cougars struck again. This time, Spangler took a corner kick that was headed by junior midfielder Jake Reber to senior defender Brady Swanson, who knocked the ball home for a 5-0 lead. The goal was the second of the year for Swanson.

Forster closed out the scoring in the 6-0 victory in the 86th minute when he took a pass from Allen and found the back of the net for his second goal of the match and his third goal of the season.

“I thought that we played very well in spite of the weather being what it was,” said MVNU coach Paul Furey. “Typically, it’s difficult to really have a good, effective attack when the field is slick and a little unpredictable, but our guys did a great job of keeping the ball and really keeping pressure in their attacking half throughout the match as indicated by the shot total. We played intelligently and I was very proud of our effort today. We really came at them in a number of ways today.”

The victory was the 12th straight home win for the Cougars as they broke the previous school record of 11 consecutive home victories set from 2002-2003. It also marked the seventh straight win overall this season with all seven being of the shutout variety.

MVNU posted an overwhelming 41-8 lead in total shots with a 23-2 advantage in shots on goal. Stout stopped two shots to post his seventh shutout of the season and the 33rd of his career as he moved into a tie for 10th place in NAIA history in that category. Hartman was busy in net for the Wildcats (2-5, 1-2 AMC) as he stopped 17 shots.

After six straight home matches, the Cougars will now go back on the road for the first time since August 27 when MVNU travels to the University of Rio Grande for a non-conference match on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. The Cougars and the Red Storm, who are currently ranked No. 9 in the latest NAIA poll, met three times last year including in the NAIA National Championship semifinals.

“We have a big challenge in front of us on Wednesday when we travel to Rio Grande,” said Furey. “We are excited about the opportunity to play our old conference foe. It should be a great match.”
