The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University men’s soccer team pulled out a
1-0 American Mideast Conference victory over
Shawnee State University on Thursday night
in a match played at Valley High School due
to the Bears’ home field being unplayable
due to all the recent rain combined with
five matches being played there in the past
six days.
The
first half was scoreless until the 39th
minute when senior midfielder Scott Spangler
slipped a pass to junior midfielder Cody
Snouffer (left), who fired a
low shot into the far corner to put the
Cougars (10-4, 4-1 AMC) on top 1-0. The goal
was Snouffer’s fifth of the season, while
Spangler was credited with his sixth assist
of the year as he took over tenth place on
the program’s career assists list with 21.
MVNU had scoring opportunities in the
second half, but the Cougars were unable to
capitalize to extend their lead.
Fortunately, MVNU held a 21-6 advantage in
total shots and a 7-0 edge in shots on goal
as the Cougars and senior goalkeeper Alex
Stout were able to post their ninth shutout
of the season without having to make a save.
The shutout was also the 35th of Stout’s
career as he extended his own school mark.
David Crossan and Kevin Fischer combined to
stop six shots for Shawnee State (5-5-1,
1-4-1 AMC).
“This was a win on the road and a
conference win which was nice, but we have
some things we need to sort out and improve
as we come into the home stretch of our
season,” said MVNU coach Paul Furey. “On our
goal, we had a good build-up and moved the
ball well and Cody had a nice finish. That
was one of the few lone bright spots in the
attack this evening.”
The Cougars will take the weekend off
before returning to action next Tuesday at
7:00 p.m. when the team will travel to Notre
Dame College to take on the defending AMC
champions, who are currently 10-1-1 overall,
4-0-1 in the AMC, and ranked No.3 in the
latest NAIA poll.
