Even heavy rain could not slow down the
Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s
soccer team on Friday afternoon as the
Cougars scored five second-half goals and
sailed past Malone College 7-0 in the team’s
2008 American Mideast Conference opener.
Fresh
off a 5-1 victory over NCAA Division III No.
12 Kenyon College on Tuesday, MVNU (4-2-0)
got on the scoreboard right away in the 17th
minute when senior forward Adam Worrall
(left) took a pass from sophomore
midfielder Jake Reber and found the back of
the net for the seventh straight match
dating back to last season as the Cougars
took a 1-0 lead. The goal was Worrall’s
team-leading seventh of the year.
Just before the half, Worrall struck
again when he took a pass from sophomore
defender Kemar Jackson and scored in the
40th minute to give MVNU a 2-0 lead at the
half. The goal increased Worrall’s season
total to eight and moved him into a tie for
eighth place on the Cougars’ all-time goals
scored list at 30 with former standout Tim
Myatt.
Nearly 13 minutes into the second half,
sophomore midfielder Cody Snouffer took a
pass from sophomore forward Rockey Cane and
scored to extend the lead to 3-0. In the
67th minute, Snouffer registered his second
goal of the match and third of the season
after a free kick by senior defender Zach
Patterson as the lead grew to 4-0.
In the 69th minute, freshman forward
Chris Allen scored his first collegiate goal
off an assist from junior defender Tyler
Warwick, and freshman midfielder Kyle Maxam
notched his first collegiate goal in the
83rd minute as he followed up a header by
junior defender Brady Swanson.
Swanson
closed out the scoring in the 84th minute
when he scored his fourth goal of the season
off a cross from freshman defender Tony
Yoder, who got his first career assist on
the play, as MVNU prevailed 7-0.
Junior goalkeeper Alex Stout
(right) notched his third shutout of
the year for the Cougars as he stopped the
only shot on goal by Malone. Warden
Neuenschwander and Derek Jeffrey combined to
stop 12 shots for the Pioneers. MVNU held a
21-4 advantage in total shots and a 19-1
edge in shots on goal. The Cougars also led
in corner kicks 9-4.
“We really played about as good as we
could under the conditions,” said MVNU coach
Paul Furey. “The downpour and the rain
really made the field very difficult to
play, but our intensity did not stop
throughout. The fact that we were able to
play all of our field players who dressed
was good. Everyone who got in just really
worked hard and it was a good result
considering the difficulty of the playing
conditions.”
“Adam is playing extremely well and
making things happen for us,” said Furey.
“Getting another early goal really propelled
us and set the tone for us the remainder of
the match. He did that again for us today.
This is a good start for us in our
conference, but we know that each
(conference match) will be a battle and now
we have to prepare for Tuesday.”
The Cougars will return to action on
Tuesday when MVNU will host Cedarville
University in an AMC match that will kick
off at 4:00 p.m.
