For the second straight day at the Bryan
(Tenn.) College Classic, the Mount Vernon
Nazarene University men’s soccer team fell
behind early and then tried to rally only to
come up short again as the Cougars dropped a 4-2
decision to Campbellsville (Ky.) University
on Saturday afternoon amidst mid 90-degree
temperatures.
The
Tigers (2-0) broke a scoreless deadlock in
the 33rd minute when Alex Adams gathered a
ball that the MVNU defense failed to clear
and found the back of the net to give
Campbellsville a 1-0 lead.
In the 41st minute, Daniel Paz set up
Camillo Mueller for a goal that pushed the
Tigers’ lead to 2-0, which is where it stood
at the half.
A minute into the second half Mueller
returned the favor to Paz as he assisted on
Paz’s goal that extended Campbellsville’s
advantage to 3-0.
However, the Cougars (0-2) did not give
up as senior forward Adam Worrall got MVNU
on the scoreboard in the 49th minute when he
scored off a free kick from the top of the
box to make it 3-1. It was Worrall’s second
goal in as many days and the 24th of his
career.
The Cougars’ comeback continued in the
61st minute when junior midfielder Scott
Spangler sent a ball to sophomore forward
Rockey Cane (above), who headed
it home to trim the deficit to 3-2 with
plenty of time left in the match.
MVNU had its best opportunity to equalize
with about 12 minutes left in the match when
Worrall had a 1-v-1 opportunity with James
Clements, the Tigers’ goalie.
However, Campbellsville was able to snuff
out the chance and then tacked on an
insurance goal in the 87th minute when
Mueller assisted on Gustavo Valecillos’
score that sealed the Tigers’ 4-2 victory.
“It was a lot like our match last night
(2-1 loss to Bryan) as we dug a hole for
ourselves and responded pretty well,” said
MVNU head coach Paul Furey. “We came back
and were looking to equalize and had some
great chances, but it just did not happen.
We are showing heart and character in
fighting back, but perhaps we need a couple
of breaks to get over the top. Right now, we
are just figuring out some things that we
need to do in order to make us more
competitive as we head back north. We need
to make some adjustments, but overall it is
not that we are playing horribly. We just
need a couple of breaks to get our first
win.”
Campbellsville held a 22-16 advantage in
total shots and a 16-9 edge in shots on
goal, while the Cougars held an overwhelming
10-1 margin in corner kicks. MVNU junior
goalkeeper Alex Stout stopped 12 shots,
while Clements posted seven saves for the
Tigers.
The Cougars will return to action on
Friday when MVNU will host the annual
First-Knox Cougar Invitational. Asbury (Ky.)
College and Nyack (N.Y.) College will square
off in the first match of the tournament at
2:00 p.m., while the Cougars will take on
Manhattan Christian (Kan.) College at 4:00
p.m. Then, the consolation match will take
place on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. followed by
the championship match at 3:00 p.m.
