The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University men’s soccer team cruised past
Cincinnati Christian University 5-1 in a
non-conference road match on Friday evening
played at Western Hills High School.
Sophomore
midfielder Nick Bryan got the scoring under
way for the Cougars (9-3-2) in the sixth
minute when he took a pass from senior
forward Adam Worrall and scored his first
career goal to give MVNU an early 1-0 lead.
Five minutes later, Worrall got into the
scoring act with his team-leading 13th goal
of the season to increase the lead to 2-0.
Freshman forward Chris Allen and junior
defender Tyler Warwick (left)
were both credited with an assist on the
play.
Just two minutes later, Worrall headed in
a cross from Allen to extend the lead to
3-0. The goal was Worrall’s 14th in 14
matches this season and gave him 36 career
goals as he moved into a tie for fifth place
on the Cougars’ career scoring list with
former standout Nate Sommers.
The Golden Eagles (3-11-1) got on the
scoreboard in the 21st minute when Tizirai
Bungy scored an unassisted goal to cut the
deficit to 3-1.
The score would remain that way until
late in the second half when senior forward
Sheldon Tugman scored off an assist from
sophomore forward Rockey Cane in the 75th
minute to push the
lead back to 4-1. The goal was Tugman’s
first of the year.
Then, with just under four minutes
remaining in the match, junior Scott Forster
scored his first goal of the year off an
assist from sophomore forward Wade Foley to
close out the 5-1 victory for the Cougars.
MVNU posted a commanding 22-5 advantage
in total shots and a 13-4 edge in shots on
goal. The Cougars also held an astonishing
17-2 margin in corner kicks. Sophomore Tyson
Porter started in goal for MVNU and stopped
three shots in 82 minutes of action before
leaving the match due to an injury. Junior
goalkeeper Alex Stout worked the final eight
minutes and did not face a shot. Meanwhile,
Thayer Wallace posted eight saves for Cincinnati
Christian in goal.
“It was nice to get a win on the road
today, but the real special thing was
getting to play everyone,” said MVNU coach
Paul Furey. “We were able to give guys who
have worked hard all year some minutes, so
in that regard it was a very profitable
match for us. The other positive thing from
this match was that it was played on an
artificial surface which allowed us to
prepare for our big match next Wednesday at
Ohio Dominican since that match will be
played on turf as well.”
The Cougars will return to action next
Wednesday when they travel to Ohio Dominican
University for an important American Mideast
Conference match that will kick off at 7:00
p.m.
