The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University men’s soccer team wrapped up a
successful weekend trip to New York with a
3-1 victory over NAIA No. 20 Roberts
Wesleyan (N.Y.) College on Saturday
afternoon in American Mideast Conference
play.
After
scoring a 1-0 victory in the 85th minute at
Houghton (N.Y.) College on Friday night, the
Cougars (7-3-2, 4-1-2 AMC) did not wait
around for last-second heroics on Saturday
as freshman forward Chris Allen took a pass
from senior forward Adam Worrall
(left) and found the back of the net
just 4:13 into the match against the Raiders
(7-2-0, 5-2-0 AMC) for an early 1-0 lead.
The score remained that way until the
33rd minute when Worrall again played a role
in the goal as he sent the ball to sophomore
defender Kemar Jackson, who cracked a
left-footed shot for his first goal of the
year to put MVNU in front 2-0.
The score remained that way until early
in the second half when Roberts Wesleyan
trimmed the lead to 2-1 in the 53rd minute
when Jake Schindler scored off an assist
from Femi Arogundade.
However, that would be as close as the
Raiders would get as Worrall gave the
Cougars some breathing room with an
insurance goal in the 84th minute as he
stole the ball from a defender and scored
his team-leading 12th goal of the season to
cap off the 3-1 victory. The goal was also
the 34th of Worrall’s career as he moved
into a tie for sixth place on MVNU’s career
goals list with 34 to match the total of
former Cougar standout Jeffery Hinds.
MVNU held a 10-7 advantage in total shots
with a commanding 9-2 edge in shots on goal
and a 5-2 margin in corner kicks. Junior
goalkeeper Alex Stout stopped one shot for
the Cougars, while Roberts Wesleyan goalie
Brion Ehman posted six saves.
“This certainly was a very nice weekend
for us playing two tough teams on the road
and getting two very good results,” said
MVNU coach Paul Furey. “Beating Roberts, who
was a ranked team, at their place was a very
nice win for us. Our guys came out once
again ready to go right from the start. Adam
setting up Chris for an early goal really
set the tone for us. We played very solid in
the first half and gave them very few
chances. We even padded our one-goal lead
with a nice goal by Kemar that was set up by
Adam once again. (Roberts Wesleyan) seemed
to play a better second half than they did
in the first and we were not quite as sharp,
but we still did what we needed to do to
preserve an important win.”
“Adam had a phenomenal weekend and just
played tremendous as he was instrumental in
every goal for us,” said Furey. “It just
demonstrates the type of player that he is.
He is certainly right at the top of the list
with the best players in our conference. Our
back line was once again solid along with
Alex in goal. We just had a lot of energy
from everyone on the field to our reserves
on the bench who were enthusiastic in their
support. We accomplished what we set out to
do this weekend and I am proud of our team.”
The Cougars will return to action on
Wednesday when MVNU will host Point Park
(Pa.) University in another AMC match that
will begin at 4:00 p.m. at Cougar Field.
