The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University men’s soccer team broke open a
2-1 match with four second-half goals on the
way to a 6-1 American Mideast Conference
victory at Shawnee State University on
Saturday afternoon.
The
Cougars (5-3-2, 2-1-2 AMC) roared out to
start the match when sophomore midfielder
Jake Reber scored his first goal of the year
just 3:11 in for a 1-0 lead. Freshman
forward Chris Allen (left)
sent a cross to senior forward Adam Worrall
whose header rebounded off the crossbar to
Reber, who knocked it home.
In the 12th minute, Worrall struck with a
goal of his own after taking a through ball
from junior defender Brady Swanson as the
lead grew to 2-0. The goal was Worrall’s
team-leading 10th in 10 matches this year
and the 32nd of his career as he moved into
a tie for seventh place on MVNU’s all-time
list with former Cougar standout Todd
Pearce.
The score remained that way until just a
minute and a half after halftime when
Shawnee State’s Steven Cox drilled a shot
from 25 yards out on the right side to cut
the deficit to 2-1.
In the 60th minute, MVNU got the goal
back when Allen took a cross from Worrall
and one-timed it into the net to push the
lead to 3-1. It was Allen’s second goal of
the season.
The lead grew to 4-1 in the 66th minute
when junior midfielder Chris Mast beat a
defender and crossed the ball to freshman
midfielder Kyle Maxam, who scored his second
goal of the season. The assist was Mast’s
team-best fourth of the year.
In the 87th minute, freshman defender
Tony Yoder scored his first career goal when
he took a bending ball from senior forward
Sheldon Tugman and blasted a left-footed
shot home to move the lead to 5-1.
Then, with 16 seconds left in the match,
Yoder set up sophomore forward Wade Foley
for his first career goal as Foley settled a
cross and fired it into the back of the net
to close out the 6-1 victory.
MVNU held a commanding 32-7 lead in total
shots including a 21-2 margin in shots on
goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Tyson Porter saw
his first action of the year for the Cougars
and registered a save, while Bobby Krauss
stopped 14 shots for Shawnee State (1-8-0,
0-4-0 AMC).
“It was nice getting a conference win on
the road today.” said MVNU coach Paul Furey.
“A lot of our younger players stepped up and
did a nice job for us helping out in the
goal production. Jake, Chris, Kyle, Tony,
and Wade each had nice goals, and Tyson did
a nice job in goal getting his first
collegiate win. Adam continues to be
consistent in scoring for us and that is
going to be important as we head into some
tough road matches next week.”
The Cougars will return to action next
weekend with conference matches at Houghton
(N.Y.) College at 6:00 p.m. on Friday and at
Roberts Wesleyan (N.Y.) College at 4:00 p.m.
on Saturday.
