The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University men’s soccer team battled
second-seeded Palm Beach Atlantic (Fla.)
University to a scoreless draw through
regulation and two overtime periods before
falling 4-2 in a penalty kick shootout in
the semifinals of the National Christian
College Athletic Association National
Tournament at Austin-Tindall Soccer Complex
on Saturday evening. After 110 minutes of
scoreless action in a physical match that
featured nearly 70 fouls between the two
squads, the match moved to a shootout with
each team designating five players to take
penalty kicks alternating between the teams.
Freshman midfielder Cody Snouffer went
first for MVNU (13-5-3), but his shot was
deflected wide by Sailfish goalkeeper Joe
Yurchak to give Palm Beach Atlantic (12-4-1)
the early edge.
After Matt Sweesy connected on his
attempt for the Sailfish to put them in
front 1-0, sophomore midfielder Chris Mast
scored for the Cougars to knot the shootout
at 1-1.
Daniel Abrahamsohn converted his
opportunity to give Palm Beach Atlantic a
2-1 advantage, and sophomore midfielder
Scott Spangler’s attempt for MVNU failed.
Chance Sumner extended the lead to 3-1
for the Sailfish as he scored on his
attempt, but junior defender Zach Patterson
kept the Cougars’ hopes alive by connecting
on his shot to trim the margin to 3-2.
Then, Cheyne Roberts end the match and
sent Palm Beach Atlantic into the national
championship match by putting his shot into
the back of the net as the Sailfish won the
shootout 4-2.
The match, which technically ends as a
tie, was the 12th shutout of the season for
MVNU as sophomore goalkeeper Alex Stout tied
the school’s single-season shutout record of
10 set previously by Josh Bush in 1998.
The Cougars will return to action on
Monday when MVNU will take on top-seeded
Indiana Wesleyan University (19-5-1) in the
