at Shawnee State

BOXSCORE
PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (9-28-2007) - After
experiencing the high of a hard-fought road
victory in a 1-0 overtime win at
regionally-ranked Notre Dame College on
Tuesday night, the Mount Vernon Nazarene
University men’s soccer team experienced the
opposite side of the spectrum with a tough
1-0 American Mideast Conference South
Division loss at Shawnee State University on
Friday afternoon.The match was scoreless
until the 82nd minute when Ryan Appell took
a through ball from Michael Mohr and found
the back of the net to give the Bears
(5-4-1, 1-1-0 AMC South) a 1-0 lead on their
first and only shot on goal in the match.
Unfortunately for the Cougars (7-3-0,
1-1-0 AMC South), that proved to be all the
scoring in the match despite the fact that
MVNU out-shot Shawnee State 15-2 with a 5-3
edge in corner kicks.
“They say that soccer can be a cruel game
and today we found out just how cruel,” said
MVNU head coach Paul Furey. “We had
countless opportunities to control the match
and allowed just one shot on goal, but we
still came out on the short end of the
stick. That is a tough one to figure out.”
“It was not like we played poorly today
or came out flat,” Furey added. “We just did
not have things fall our way at all today,
and unfortunately that’s the way it goes in
this game sometimes.”
The Cougars will take the rest of the
weekend off and will return to action on
Tuesday when MVNU will host Cedarville
University in another AMC South Division
match at 4:00 p.m.
