November 25, vs.
Piedmont (GA) College MVNU, the fourth seed, earned
third place at the National Christian College Athletic Association
National Tournament as the Cougars downed third-seeded Piedmont
4-1. Jeffery Hinds led the way with two goals, while Trevor
Knowles and Jeremy Stabile added one goal apiece. Matt
Packard, Brian Souder, and Ryan Pearce also registered one assist
each. Meanwhile, Knowles stopped seven shots in goal to
preserve the win. For their efforts in the tournament,
Hinds, Knowles, Packard, and Jamie Hilen were selected to the
All-National Tournament Team.
November 23, vs.
Judson (IL) College The fourth-seeded Cougars had their
seven-match winning streak snapped as MVNU dropped a hard-fought
1-0 decision to top-seeded Judson in the semifinals of the
National Christian College Athletic Association National
Tournament. Goalkeeper Trevor Knowles stopped seven shots to
keep the Cougars in the match, but MVNU was shut out for the fifth
time this season.
November 22, vs. York
(NE) College MVNU successfully opened play at the
National Christian College Athletic Association National
Tournament with a 3-0 win over fifth-seeded York in the first
round. Jeffery Hinds scored two goals, and Matt Packard
added another goal - his seventh straight match with at least one
goal. Danny Lueking registered an assist, while goalkeeper
Trevor Knowles posted three saves in recording the team's ninth
shutout of the year.
November 16, NYACK
(NY) COLLEGE The Cougars claimed the National Christian
College Athletic Association East Region title with a 2-1 victory
over Nyack in the NCCAA East Region championship match. Matt
Packard scored MVNU's first goal on a direct kick, and Casey
Swanson headed in the game-winner off an assist from Brian Souder
in the 77th minute. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Trevor Knowles
posted nine saves.
November 2, SHAWNEE
STATE UNIVERSITY MVNU extended its winning streak to
five straight as the Cougars closed out the regular season with a
6-0 win over Shawnee State in American Mideast Conference South
Division action. Matt Packard led the offensive attack with
two goals and an assist, while Danny Lueking scored two
goals. Dave Barry added a goal and an assist, and Jeremy
Hilen also scored one goal. Jeffery Hinds, Scott Poole, and
Brian Souder each registered one assist, while goalkeeper Trevor
Knowles stopped three shots in posting the team's eighth shutout
of the year.
November 1, KENTUCKY
CHRISTIAN COLLEGE The Cougars made it four straight
wins as MVNU blanked Kentucky Christian 6-0 in a non-conference
match. Matt Packard led the way with two goals and two
assists, while Jeffery Hinds finished with one goal and two
assists. Dave Barry added one goal and one assist, and
Jeremy Stabile tallied two assists. Nate Sommers and Casey
Swanson each scored one goal, while Ricky Warren recorded one
assist. Meanwhile, goalkeepers Ryan Pearce and Jarred Renner
combined to post the team's seventh shutout.
October 26, TRINITY
INTERNATIONAL (IL) UNIVERSITY MVNU won its third
straight match with a 6-1 non-conference victory over Trinity
International. Nate Sommers and Matt Packard led the way
with two goals and an assist apiece, while Dave Barry added a goal
and an assist. Jeffery Hinds scored the Cougars' other goal,
and Scott Poole and Shawn Morrison each registered an assist. Meanwhile, goalkeeper
Trevor Knowles stopped three shots.
October 24, at Urbana
University The Cougars picked up their first American
Mideast Conference South Division victory of the year as MVNU
blanked Urbana 2-0 in conference action. Matt Packard scored
both goals for the Cougars, while Ricky Warren registered an
assist. Goalkeeper Trevor Knowles stopped seven shots in
posting the team's sixth shutout of the season.
October 17, at Malone
College MVNU scored five goals in the first 18 minutes
and cruised to a 6-1 non-conference victory at Malone in the
team's highest scoring output of the season. Jeffery Hinds,
Brian Souder, Nate Sommers, Shawn Morrison, Matt Packard, and
Scott Poole each scored for the Cougars, while Danny Lueking added
a pair of assists and Hinds and Sommers registered one assist
apiece.
Goalkeepers Trevor Knowles and Ryan Pearce combined to stop three
shots.
October 15, CEDARVILLE
UNIVERSITY The Cougars dropped another hard-fought
conference match as MVNU fell 1-0 to Cedarville in American
Mideast Conference South Division action. The Cougars
out-shot the Yellow Jackets 13-10, but MVNU could not find the
back of the net as the team remained scoreless in conference
play. Trevor Knowles stopped five shots in goal for the
Cougars.
October 12, UNIVERSITY OF
RIO GRANDE MVNU put forth a valiant effort against
unbeaten Rio Grande, ranked #2 in the NAIA, but the Cougars came
up short 2-0 in American Mideast Conference South Division
action. The visiting Redmen scored first in the 22nd minute
off a direct kick and then added an insurance goal in the 88th
minute. Trevor Knowles stopped 10 shots on goal for MVNU.
October 5, at Taylor (IN)
University The Cougars blanked Taylor 3-0 in a
non-conference match as MVNU posted its fifth shutout of the
season with goalkeeper Trevor Knowles stopping five shots.
Nate Sommers and Matt Packard each had a goal and an assist, while
Shawn Morrison also scored a goal for the Cougars.
October 1, MADONNA (MI)
UNIVERSITY MVNU dropped a tough 2-1 decision in two
overtimes to Madonna in a non-conference match. After a
scoreless first half, the Crusaders took a 1-0 lead in the 51st
minute. Nate Sommers equalized for the Cougars in the 67th
minute, and then neither team scored again in regulation or the
first 10-minute overtime. Then, with just 1:47 gone by in
the second overtime, Madonna scored the game-winning goal.
Trevor Knowles stopped four shots in goal for MVNU.
September 28, SIENA HEIGHTS
(MI) UNIVERSITY The Cougars blanked Siena Heights 2-0
in a hard-fought non-conference match. Defender Casey
Swanson put MVNU up in the first half off a corner kick by Matt
Packard, and Nate Sommers added an insurance goal as Shawn
Morrison and Brian Souder both assisted on the play.
Meanwhile, Trevor Knowles stopped two shots in goal as the team
posted its fourth shutout of the year.
September 24, at Tiffin
University After trailing just 1-0 at the half, MVNU
fell 4-0 at Tiffin in an American Mideast Conference South
Division match. The host Dragons out-shot the Cougars 29-13
with an 18-7 advantage in shots on goal. Trevor Knowles
posted 13 saves in goal for MVNU.
September 21, at Geneva
(PA) College The Cougars pulled out a 3-2
non-conference victory at Geneva in a match that featured five
goals in the second half. Justin Thompson scored his first
collegiate goal in the 83rd minute to break a 2-2 deadlock for the
win. Matt Packard and Shawn Morrison also added one goal
each, while Danny Lueking tallied two assists. Jeremy Hilen
and Dave Barry also registered an assist apiece. Meanwhile,
goalkeeper Trevor Knowles stopped 10 shots to preserve the victory
including nine in the scoreless first half.
September 18, OHIO DOMINICAN UNIVERSITY MVNU
dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision to Ohio Dominican in an
American Mideast Conference South Division match. The
Panthers, who extended their winning streak to seven straight,
scored the only goal of the match with 7:02 remaining in the
second half. Trevor Knowles posted three saves in goal for
the Cougars, who were shut out for the first time this season.
September 14, WITTENBERG UNIVERSITY The
Cougars rallied from a 1-0 deficit in the closing minutes of
regulation and then won the match in overtime as MVNU downed
Wittenberg 2-1 in a non-conference match. Nate Sommers
scored both goals for the Cougars - one with 5:02 remaining in
regulation and the other with 4:03 left in the first sudden death
overtime period. Jeffery Hinds assisted on the first goal,
while Shawn Morrison had the assist on the game-winner.
Trevor Knowles also stopped four shots in goal for MVNU.
September 10, at Kenyon College MVNU
returned to its winning ways as the Cougars blanked Kenyon 4-0 in
a non-conference match against its Knox County rival.
Freshmen Scott Poole and Shawn Morrison scored each scored their
first collegiate goals with Poole adding an assist. Dave
Barry and Matt Packard added one goal apiece, while Jeffery Hinds
registered a pair of assists. Trevor Knowles and Ryan Pearce
combined to stop three shots in goal as the Cougars posted their
third shutout of the season.
September 7, CUMBERLAND (KY) COLLEGE The
Cougars dropped a 2-1 decision to Cumberland in the championship
match of the First-Knox Cougar Invitational to finish in a tie for
second place. Nate Sommers gathered a loose ball in the box
and scored his first goal of the season in the 68th minute to pull
the Cougars within one goal. Meanwhile, Trevor Knowles
posted two saves in goal. MVNU's Jeffery Hinds was selected
as the Most Valuable Offensive Player of the tournament, and he
was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Sommers and Danny
Lueking.
September 6, LEE (TN) UNIVERSITY MVNU
pulled out a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Lee in the first round
of the First-Knox Cougar Invitational. Jeffery Hinds scored
the only goal of the match in the 10th minute off an assist from
Nate Sommers. Meanwhile, Trevor Knowles helped the team post
its second straight shutout as he stopped six shots in goal.
August 31, at Northwest Nazarene (ID)
University The Cougars posted their first victory of
the 2002 season as MVNU blanked Northwest Nazarene 3-0 in a
non-conference match. After a scoreless first half, Jeffery
Hinds got the Cougars on the scoreboard in the 50th minute and
added another goal in the 79th minute. Then, Dave Barry
rounded out the scoring in the 85th minute. Matt Packard and
Nate Sommers were each credited with an assist in the match, while
Trevor Knowles stopped one shot on goal in posting the team's
first shutout of the season.
August 29, at Albertson (ID) College MVNU
kicked off the 2002 season with a hard-fought 2-1 non-conference
loss at Albertson, ranked #16 in the NAIA preseason poll.
After a scoreless first half, the host Coyotes built a 2-0 lead
early in the second half. Jeffery Hinds pulled the Cougars
within one goal as he scored his first collegiate goal off an
assist from Marc Stasiowski in the 84th minute. MVNU had
several other opportunites including two chances in the final
three minutes, but the Cougars were unable to equalize.
Trevor Knowles posted three saves in goal.
