Cougar Soccer Coach
Paul Furey is entering his
eighteenth season as the head coach of the MVNU men's soccer program. Over the past
seventeen years, Furey has led the Cougars to a 191-142-23 overall record
(.569) - the most wins and the best winning percentage of any coach in the program's
28-year history. The past ten seasons have been the most
productive in MVNU history as the Cougars
have notched 133 victories.
In 2006, Furey guided MVNU to a 7-10-1 overall record and a
4-4-0 mark in the highly-competitive
American Mideast Conference South Division
as the team finished tied for fifth place in
conference play.
During Furey's tenure at MVNU, he has received several honors. In 1997, he was selected as the Mid-Ohio Conference and NCCAA East Region Coach of the Year. He was also named the NCCAA East Region Coach of the Year in 1999 and 2000 as well as the Ohio Collegiate Soccer Association NAIA Coach of the Year in 2000.
In addition, he was selected to coach the OCSA All-Star Team following the 2000 season.
Furey recorded his 200th career victory on October 12, 2005, in a
3-0 victory over Malone College.
MVNU has set or tied 25 team or individual records under Furey's leadership, including the most victories in a season with 19 in 1998. The Cougars have also had two players (Josh Robson in 1999 and 2000 and Matt Salisbury in 1999) earn NAIA Honorable Mention All-American status.
In addition, the team earned the AMC South Division Fair Play
Award in 2002, 2005 and 2006.
A native of Long Island, New York, Furey lived in south Florida for twelve years where he coached five seasons at his alma mater, Miami Christian College. Furey was a three-sport standout as a student at Miami Christian in soccer, basketball, and baseball, and he left as the school's all-time leading scorer in basketball when he graduated in 1983.
After serving two years as the Athletic Director for the Miami Shores Recreation Department, Furey accepted the head coaching job at MVNU beginning in the fall of 1990. In addition to his coaching duties, he served as the college's sports information director for five years.
Furey, who also teaches in the Physical Education Department at MVNU, resides in Mount Vernon with his wife, Debra, and their children, Chelsea and Justin. He received his advanced national coaching diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and is licensed by the United States Soccer Federation. He also served as the head coach of an Athletes in Action women's soccer team that traveled to Costa Rica in the summer of 2001.
