Cougar Soccer Coach
Paul Furey is entering his
20th season as the head coach of the
MVNU men's soccer program. Over the past 19 years, Furey has led the Cougars to a
223-151-28 overall record
(.590) - the most wins and the best winning percentage of any coach in the program's
30-year history. The past 11 seasons have
been the most productive in MVNU history as
the Cougars have notched 153 victories.
In 2008, Furey guided MVNU to an 18-4-2 overall record and
an 8-1-2 American Mideast Conference mark.
The Cougars earned the program's first-ever
berth in the NAIA National Tournament and
advanced all the way to the national
semifinals. The team was also ranked
No. 7 in the final NAIA poll - the team's
highest ranking ever.
Furey has received numerous honors while at
MVNU. He was named the Mid-Ohio
Conference Coach of the Year in 1997 and has
been selected as the National Christian
College Athletic Association East Region
Coach of the Year four times (1997, 1999,
2000, and 2008). He coached the Ohio
Collegiate Soccer Association All-Star Team
following the 2000 season after being named
the OCSA NAIA Coach of the Year, and he was
the 2008 NCCAA National Coach of the Year
and the NSCAA NAIA Great Lakes Region Coach
of the Year.
MVNU has set or tied 27 team or individual records under Furey's leadership, including the most victories in a season with 19 in 1998. The Cougars have
had four players receive NAIA All-American
honors (Zach Patterson - First Team in 2008,
Adam Worrall - Third Team in 2008, Josh
Robson - Honorable Mention in 1999 and 2000,
and Matt Salisbury - Honorable Mention in
2000) and the team earned the AMC South Division Fair Play
Award in 2002, 2005 and 2006.
A native of Long Island, New York, Furey lived in south Florida for twelve years where he coached five seasons at his alma mater, Miami Christian College. Furey was a three-sport standout as a student at Miami Christian in soccer, basketball, and baseball, and he left as the school's all-time leading scorer in basketball when he graduated in 1983.
After serving for two years as the Athletic Director for the Miami Shores Recreation Department, Furey accepted the head coaching job at MVNU beginning in the fall of 1990. In addition to his coaching duties, he served as the
university's sports information director for five years.
Furey, who also teaches in the Physical Education Department at MVNU, resides in Mount Vernon with his wife, Debra, and their children, Chelsea and Justin. He received his advanced national coaching diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and is licensed by the United States Soccer Federation. He also served as the head coach of an Athletes in Action women's soccer team that traveled to Costa Rica in the summer of 2001.
