CLERMONT, Fla. (3-20-2012) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's fastpitch softball team dropped a pair of games on Tuesday as the Lady Cougars fell 7-0 to Savannah College of Art & Design-Savannah and 14-2 to Midland (Neb.) University at the National Training Center.

In the first game of the day, MVNU (4-5) had its offense held in check by the pitching of Sydnee Schorr from SCAD-Savannah (12-0). The Lady Bees' hurler retired the first 15 batters in a row that she faced before junior pitcher Jill Wildermuth reached on an error leading off the top of the sixth inning. One batter later, sophomore infielder Kara Morrison collected an infield single for the only hit that the Lady Cougars would have in the game.

Meanwhile, SCAD-Savannah, which just missed cracking the NAIA Top 25 poll this week as the highest receiving votes team, scored all the runs it would need with a single run in the bottom of the first inning. The Lady Bees added five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to break the game wide open as they sent eight batters to the plate and Olivia Kline had the big blow with a grand slam. Then, SCAD-Savannah capped off the scoring in the 7-0 victory with another run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Wildermuth (3-2) took the loss on the mound for MVNU as she gave up 12 hits, two walks, and seven runs over six innings of work.

Schorr finished with 10 strikeouts and no walks as she tossed all seven innings to notch the one-hit shutout for the Lady Bees.

Next, the Lady Cougars turned their attention to Midland (Neb.) University in the nightcap of the days action. Midland (4-12) came into the game - its third of the day - fresh off two one-run victories over Taylor (Ind.) University.

MVNU wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning when senior outfielder MacKenzie Shaw walked to lead off the frame, moved to second on a sacrifice by Morrison, advanced to third on a ground out by junior infielder Brittney Kuhn, and scored on an RBI single by freshman catcher Morgan Wade to give the Lady Cougars a 1-0 lead.

After Midland took a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning, MVNU responded with a run in the bottom of the third inning when Shaw led off the inning with a single and came around to score on an RBI single by Kuhn to knot the score at 2-2. The Lady Cougars loaded the bases with just one out as they attempted to regain the lead, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the threat.

That would prove to be the final runs that MVNU would score, while Midland took the lead for good with three runs in the top of the fourth inning and then adding two more runs in the top of the sixth inning for a 7-2 lead. The Lady Warriors closed out the scoring by sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring seven times in the top of the seventh inning to cap off the 14-2 victory.

Senior right-hander Meagan Stott (0-2) took the loss for the Lady Cougars as she gave up 22 hits, one walk, and 14 runs (11 earned) over seven innings with three strikeouts.

Sammy Hislop earned the victory for Midland as she scattered eight hits, three walks, and two runs over seven innings with six strikeouts.

Shaw and freshman first baseman Grace Basinger each had two hits to lead MVNU, while Kathy Curtis went 5-for-5 with four RBI to pace Midland. Ashley Willard and Jennie Sayker also added four hits each for the Lady Warriors.

The Lady Cougars will be right back in action on Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. when they will face Midland again, and then MVNU will take on St. Catherine (Minn.) University at 11 a.m.
