MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (4-24-2012) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's fastpitch softball team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end as the Lady Cougars were swept by the University of Rio Grande 7-3 and 7-3 in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon at Cougar Field.

The first game saw each team take turns plating runs in the first two innings as the visiting RedStorm (23-18) scored three runs in the top of the first inning before host MVNU (10-23) answered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run trip by junior pitcher Jill Wildermuth to pull the Lady Cougars within 3-2.

Rio Grande scored a run in the top of the second inning to extend its lead, but MVNU stayed within reach at 4-3 when the RedStorm committed a costly error that allowed a run to score.

The score remained that way until the top of the fifth inning when Rio Grande added an insurance run. Then, in the top of the seventh, the RedStorm tacked on two more runs to complete the 7-3 victory.

Wildermuth (5-8) suffered the loss for the Lady Cougars as she allowed 11 hits, five walks, and seven runs over seven innings with four strikeouts.

Meanwhile, Allison Mills (10-6) allowed just five hits, one walk, and three runs over seven innings without four strikeouts.

Offensively, senior outfielder Jenn Gulley collected two of the Lady Cougars' five hits to pace the offense, while Katie Stewart and Maegen Pendleton led Rio Grande with three hits apiece.

MVNU took the lead to start the second game when the Lady Cougars broke the scoreless deadlock with a pair of runs in the bottom third inning on back-to-back singles by sophomore shortstop Kara Morrison and junior second baseman Brittney Kuhn.

Trailing 2-0, the RedStorm bounced back to knot the score at 2-2 in the top of the fourth and then added two more runs in the top of the fifth inning to take the lead 4-2.

MVNU tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh inning as freshman outfielder Deanna Dill led off the frame with a triple. Two outs later, senior outfielder MacKenzie Shaw line a single through the left side of the infield to pull the Lady Cougars within 4-3 as Dill scored. However, with runners at first and second base, MVNU was unable to get any closer as Rio Grande prevailed 4-3.

Sophomore right-hander Ashley Riffell (4-10) allowed just five hits, one walk, and four runs over seven innings with five strikeouts as she kept the Lady Cougars in the game.

Meanwhile, Sydney Morris (3-3) earned the win for the RedStorm as she scattered eight hits and three runs over seven innings with nine strikeouts.

Shaw, Morrison, and Kuhn each had two hits to lead MVNU, while Kaylee Walk had two hits for Rio Grande.

The Lady Cougars will look to bounce back on Wednesday at 2 p.m. when MVNU will host Huntington (Ind.) University in a Mid-Central College Conference doubleheader that was originally scheduled for last Saturday but was rained out.
