MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (4-19-2012) - The Mount
Vernon Nazarene University women's fastpitch
softball team swept a Mid-Central College
Conference doubleheader from Grace (Ind.)
College on Thursday afternoon at Cougar
Field by the scores of 3-2 and 2-1 in eight
innings as the Lady Cougars extended their
winning streak to three in a row.
In
the first game, MVNU (10-21, 3-11 MCC) built
an early 3-0 lead by scoring two times in
the bottom of the first inning on a
sacrifice fly by senior outfielder Jenn
Gulley and an error and then adding an RBI
single by sophomore shortstop Kara Morrison
in the bottom of the second inning.
The score remained that way until the top of
the fourth inning when the visiting Lady
Lancers (10-34, 5-11 MCC) used three hits
and an error to trim the lead to 3-2.
After going down in order in the top of
the fifth and sixth innings, Grace
threatened to tie the game or even take the
lead in the top of the seventh inning as two
singles and a walk loaded the bases with two
outs before the Lady Cougars registered the
final out to secure the one-run victory.
Junior right-hander Jill Wildermuth
(5-7) earned the victory for MVNU as she
scattered nine hits, one walk, and two
unearned runs over seven innings with three
strikeouts.
Meanwhile, Olivia Winget
(3-13) took the loss for the Lady Lancers as
she gave up eight hits and three runs over
six innings with three strikeouts.
Morrison led the Lady Cougars' offensive
attack by going 3-for-3, while Winget,
Brittney Thacker, and Jordan McKinley had
two hits apiece for the Lady Lancers.
The
second game was another pitchers' duel as
MVNU sophomore right-hander Ashley Riffell
(right) (4-9) and
Grace's Meredith Baker (6-17) allowed just
one run apiece through the first seven
innings. The Lady Cougars got on the
scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning
on an RBI single by senior outfielder
MacKenzie Shaw. The Lady Lancers' run came
on an RBI single by Winget to knot the score
at 1-1.
Grace had a golden
opportunity to take the lead in the top of
the sixth inning with runners at second and
third with just one out, but Riffell got a
strikeout and a ground out to end the
threat.
The game moved to extra
innings all knotted at 1-1 and in the bottom
of the eighth inning Morrison reached on a
leadoff single, was bunted to second by
freshman outfielder Deanna Dill and
continued on to third on the play. Then, she
came home with the winning run on a
sacrifice fly by freshman catcher Morgan
Wade to leftfield as MVNU posted a 2-1
walk-off win.
Riffell was outstanding
on the mound for the Lady Cougars as she
allowed just five hits, two walks, and one
run over eight innings while striking out a
career-high 11 batters.
Baker was
also solid for Indiana Wesleyan as she
limited MVNU to eight hits, one walk, and
two runs over 7.2 innings with five
strikeouts.
Shaw led the Lady Cougars
with three hits, while Morrison and Gulley
finished with two hits apiece. Winget went
3-for-4 to pace the Lady Wildcats, and
Samantha Fields collected Indiana Wesleyan's
only other two hits.
MVNU will look
to continue its winning ways on Saturday at
1 p.m. when the Lady Cougars will host
Huntington (Ind.) University in another MCC
doubleheader.
