SPRING ARBOR, Mich. (4-12-2012) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's fastpitch softball team lost both games of a Mid-Central College Conference doubleheader at Spring Arbor (Mich.) University on Thursday afternoon as the Lady Cougars fell 10-0 and 4-3.

In the first game, Spring Arbor (11-21, 3-5 MCC) jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as the host Lady Cougars sent 12 batters to the plate and took advantage of two errors, a walk, a hit batsman, and six hits to plate seven runs.

The lead grew to 9-0 in the bottom of the second inning when Spring Arbor tacked on two more runs. Then, in the bottom of the fourth inning, the host Lady Cougars rounded out the scoring with another run as the game ended after five innings with Spring Arbor prevailing 10-0.

Sophomore right-hander Ashley Riffell (2-9) started and last just one inning for MVNU (7-20, 0-10 MCC) as she gave up six hits, one walk, and seven runs (five earned) with two strikeouts. Senior right-hander Meagan Stott tossed the final three innings and scattered five hits, two walks, and three runs.

Erika Lehr started and picked up the win for Spring Arbor as she allowed just four hits and a walk over four innings with six strikeouts. Lauren Brenner retired all three batters she faced in her one inning of relief.

Offensively, freshman outfielder Deanna Dill and freshman first baseman Grace Basinger each had a double for MVNU, while Maggie Ridener, April Patnaude, Debbie England, Tori Fite, and Alika Kingsbury each had two hits for Spring Arbor.

MVNU got off to a good start in the second game as the visiting Lady Cougars took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on freshman catcher Morgan Wade's two-run homer - her team-leading fourth of the season.

The lead was short-lived, though, as Spring Arbor answered with three runs in the bottom of the first inning to move on top 3-2. Then, the host Lady Cougars tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth inning for a 4-2 lead.

That run proved to be the difference maker in the game as MVNU pulled within 4-3 in the top of the sixth inning as Spring Arbor committed three errors, but the visiting Lady Cougars were unable to get any closer as they remained winless in conference play.

Junior right-hander Jill Wildermuth (4-7) took the loss for MVNU despite allowing just six hits, four walks, and four runs over six innings with three strikeouts.

Patnaude earned the victory for Spring Arbor as she tossed 5.1 innings and scattered seven hits, two walks, and two runs, while Lehr notched a save with 1.2 innings of work as she allowed one hit and one unearned run with one strikeout.

Basinger and junior second baseman Brittney Kuhn each had two hits apiece for MVNU, while Patnaude collected two hits and two RBI for Spring Arbor.

The Lady Cougars will return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. when MVNU will host Goshen (Ind.) College in another MCC doubleheader.
