UPLAND, Ind. (4-6-2012) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's fastpitch softball team was shut out in both games of a Mid-Central College Conference doubleheader at Taylor (Ind.) University on Friday afternoon as the Lady Cougars fell 1-0 and 8-0.

In the first game, MVNU sophomore right-hander Ashley Riffell (2-6) cruised through the first four innings before allowing the host Lady Trojans (19-15, 4-4 MCC) their first hit with two out in the bottom of the fifth inning. During that span, she struck out eight batters and the only base runner to reach was Alyssa Brodbeck, who was hit by a pitch with two outs in the bottom of the first inning.

Unfortunately for Riffell and the Lady Cougars (6-15, 0-6 MCC), MVNU was unable to generate any scoring of its own despite opportunities in every inning. The Lady Cougars left one base runner on in each of the first three innings before stranding the bases loaded in the top of the fourth inning.

After MVNU again left a runner on in both the top of the fifth and sixth innings, Taylor was able to push across what would prove to be the only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs, Laura Strode reached on a fielder's choice, stole second base, and came around to score on an RBI single by Brodbeck to put the Lady Trojans on top 1-0.

Then, in the top of the seventh inning, the Lady Cougars went out in order for the first time in the game as Taylor claimed the one-run victory.

Riffell took the hard-luck loss on the mound as she allowed just three hits and one run over six innings with a season-high nine strikeouts.

Hannah Klebesadel (6-6) earned the shutout for the Lady Trojans by allowing just four hits over seven innings with four strikeouts.

Offensively, junior second baseman Brittney Kuhn had the lone extra base hit for MVNU, while Riffell, senior outfielder Jenn Gulley, and freshman outfielder Morgan Wade each had a single.

The second game was another pitchers' duel through the first three and a half innings with neither team able to push across a run. Then, in the bottom of the fourth inning, Taylor sent 10 batters to the plate, collected six hits and one walk, and scored seven times to take a commanding 7-0 lead.

Then, in the bottom of the sixth inning, Karon Earley hit an RBI double with two outs to plate Brodbeck to put the mercy rule in effect as the Lady Trojans prevailed 8-0.

Junior right-hander Jill Wildermuth (4-6) started and took the loss as she lasted just 3.2 innings and surrendered nine hits, one walk, and six runs with one strikeout. Riffell recorded the final out of the fourth inning, but not before allowing one hit and one run. Senior right-hander Meagan Stott tossed the final 1.2 innings and gave up three hits and a run.

Earley (5-3) scattered seven hits and two walks over six innings with five strikeouts as she tossed Taylor's second shutout of the day. MVNU stranded eight base runners in the game.

Offensively, sophomore shortstop Kara Morrison led the Lady Cougars with two hits, while Earley and Brodbeck paced the Lady Trojans with three hits each with Earley pounding a two-run homer and finishing with three RBI for the game.

MVNU will return to action on Saturday with another MCC road doubleheader at 1 p.m. at Indiana Wesleyan University. Barring a rainout next Tuesday, that will wrap up what has been a string of 20 straight road games for the Lady Cougars.
