MISHAWAKA, Ind. (3-31-2012) - The Mount
Vernon Nazarene University women's fastpitch
softball team dropped both games of a
Mid-Central College Conference doubleheader
at Bethel (Ind.) College as the Lady Cougars
fell 7-2 and 16-0 on Saturday afternoon.
MVNU (6-13, 0-4 MCC) got the day off to a
promising start in the top of the first
inning of game one when freshman outfielder
Morgan Wade pounded a two-out, two-run home
run to leftfield to put the Lady Cougars on
top 2-0. The home run was her second of the
year.
However, the host Lady Pilots (8-10, 2-0 MCC)
responded with two runs in the bottom of the
first inning to knot the score at 2-2 as
Danielle Reilly answered Wade's bomb with a
two-run blast of her own.
From that point on, it was all Bethel as the
Lady Pilots took the lead for good with two
runs in the bottom of the third inning and
then added one run in the bottom of the
fourth inning and two more in the bottom of
the fifth inning on the way to the 7-2
victory.
Sophomore right-hander Ashley Riffell (2-5)
suffered the loss on the mound as she gave
up 12 hits and seven runs over six innings
with two strikeouts.
Natalie Newell earned the win for Bethel as
she allowed just four hits and two runs over
seven innings with eight strikeouts.
The second game was all Lady Pilots as they
scored five runs in the bottom of the first
inning and then scored at least one run in
each of their four at bats on the way to
pounding out 17 hits and finishing with a
16-0 victory. Jenny Hedrick and Newell each
hit home runs and drove in four runs apiece
to lead the way.
Junior right-hander Jill Wildermuth (4-5)
started and lasted just 1.1 innings as she
gave up five hits and five runs (two
earned). Senior right-hander Meagan Stott
tossed the final 2.2 innings and surrendered
12 hits, two walks, and 11 runs with one
strikeout.
Kendra Zache earned the win for Bethel as
she limited the Lady Cougars to just six
hits and one walk while tossing five shutout
innings with three strikeouts.
Junior infielder Brittney Kuhn was the lone
MVNU player with two hits.
The Lady Cougars will look to snap their
six-game losing streak when MVNU returns to
action on Tuesday with a non-conference
doubleheader at Notre Dame College that is
slated to start at 3 p.m.
