URBANA, Ohio (3-28-2012) - The Mount Vernon
Nazarene University women's fastpitch
softball team dropped both games of a
non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday
afternoon at Urbana University by the scores
of 9-0 and 5-1.
In the first game, MVNU (6-9) managed just
two hits and only four base runners in the
game, while the Blue Knights (8-13) pounded
out 14 hits and scored in every inning
except the bottom of the second inning in
posting the 9-0 victory.
The Lady Cougars' only base runners in the
game were a one-out walk to senior first
baseman Jenn Gulley in the top of the second
inning, a two-out single by senior
outfielder MacKenzie Shaw in the top of the
third inning, and a two-out double by junior
pitcher Jill Wildermuth followed by
sophomore infielder Kara Morrison being hit
by a pitch in the top of the fifth inning.
Wildermuth (4-4) suffered the loss for MVNU
as she allowed 14 hits, two walks, and nine
runs over 4.2 innings with one strikeout.
Meanwhile, Haley Kolmerten (6-4) earned the
victory for Urbana as she allowed just two
hits and one walk in tossing the shutout
that included five strikeouts.
Megan Risner led the Blue Knights offense by
going 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two
RBI, while Heather Hakola was 3-for-3 with
two RBI. Ashley Skinner and Carly Ivan also
added two hits and two RBI apiece.
In the second game, Urbana took an early 2-0
lead in the bottom of the first inning as
the Blue Knights strung together three
straight two-out hits.
The Lady Cougars trimmed the lead to 2-1 in
the top of the third inning when sophomore
outfielder Lindsey Minor doubled to left
center and moved to third on a bunt by
Morrison. After a walk to Shaw and a
strikeout by junior infielder Brittney Kuhn,
Minor came in to score on a wild pitch.
Urbana got the two runs back in the bottom
of the third inning to go in front 4-1, and
then the Blue Knights capped off the scoring
with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning
to make the final score 5-1.
Ashley Riffell (2-3) took the loss for MVNU
despite allowed just five hits and five runs
(four earned) over six innings with four
strikeouts.
Chelsea Mead (1-3) earned the victory for
Urbana by tossing five innings and giving up
just two hits, three walks, and one run
while striking out seven batters. Lauren
Anderson notched her first save of the year
with two perfect innings of relief that
included one strikeout.
Gulley and Minor collected the only two hits
the Lady Cougars had in the game as they
each doubled. Meanwhile, Hakola went 2-for-3
with three runs and three RBI to pace the
Blue Knights.
MVNU will return to action on Friday when
the Lady Cougars will travel to the
University of Saint Francis (Ind.) for the
team's first Mid-Central College Conference
doubleheader that will start at 3 p.m.
