PEPPER PIKE, Ohio (4-30-2011) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's fastpitch softball team exploded for 32 hits and 22 runs, got two solid pitching performances, and played great defense as the Lady Cougars posted an American Mideast Conference doubleheader sweep at Ursuline College by the scores of 9-3 and 13-1 to close the season on Saturday afternoon.

MVNU (9-19, 5-9 AMC) set the tone for the day in the top of the first inning of game one when junior first baseman Jenn Gulley singled in a run and sophomore designated player Kaylee Hewitt (left) pounded a three-run homer to left center to stake the Lady Cougars to an early 4-0 lead.

After the host Lady Arrows (6-19, 3-11 AMC) cut the lead in half with two runs in the bottom of the second inning, MVNU extended its lead to 7-2 in the top of the third inning on a two-run double to right center by Hewitt and an RBI single by senior outfielder Liz Misich.

Ursuline scratched across a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to pull within 7-3, but back-to-back RBI doubles by sophomore shortstop Melissa Eickholt and Hewitt in the top of the seventh inning capped off the 9-3 victory for the Lady Cougars.

Hewitt paced the offense by going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a career-high six RBI, while sophomore third baseman Loren Thomas also collected three hits and scored two runs. Misich, Eickholt, and junior outfielder MacKenzie Shaw each added two hits apiece.

Junior right-hander Meagan Stott (1-5) earned the victory on the mound for MVNU as she scattered five hits, four walks, and three runs over seven innings with six strikeouts.

The Lady Cougars showed that the first game was no fluke when MVNU put a five-spot on the scoreboard in the top of the second inning in game two and never looked back. Shaw had a two-run single in the frame, while Misich, Gulley, and Thomas also drove in one run apiece in the inning.

The Lady Cougars extended the lead to 7-0 in the top of the fourth inning on RBI singles by Gulley and Eickholt.

Then, MVNU put the game away in the top of the seventh inning with six runs to go in front 13-0. Misich and Shaw each had run-scoring singles to get the scoring started, Gulley (right) pounded a two-run double, and Thomas capped the scoring with a two-run homer to left field.

Ursuline avoided being shut out in the bottom of the seventh inning when the first two batters reached on hits and a run came in on an RBI ground out to make the final score 13-1.

Senior lefty Stephanie Burlew (5-9) capped off her four-year career by throwing a five-hitter for her eighth complete game of the season as she allowed just one run while striking out four in picking up the win on the mound.

Gulley tied the school record for hits in a game by going 5-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored. Her three doubles were also one shy of the school mark. Thomas also went 4-for-4 with three RBI, and Shaw was 2-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. In addition, Misich had two hits, two RBI, and two runs scored in her final collegiate game.

"While our record has been disappointing this season, we have such a young group who lacked much college experience coming into the year,” said MVNU coach Jeana Howald. "We pitched, hit, and played excellent defense today and I was happy for the kids. It was a good way to finish the season.”
