CLERMONT, Fla. (3-18-2010) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s fastpitch softball team picked up two more wins on Thursday evening as the Lady Cougars downed Bates (Maine) College 6-0 and the University of Massachusetts-Lowell 3-1 at the National Training Center to finish their annual spring trip with a 5-4 record.

MVNU (5-4) wasted no time in taking a lead in the first game as the Lady Cougars got three singles to load the bases with one out before freshman Kaylee Hewitt blasted a grand slam to left center to stake the team to a 4-0 lead. A walk to freshman third baseman Loren Thomas, a double by senior outfielder Lauretta Wallace, and an RBI ground out by senior outfielder Leslie Banichar increased the lead to 5-0.

MVNU tacked on another run in the bottom of the third inning when Hewitt led off the frame by reaching on an error and then came around to score one out later on a triple by Wallace down the rightfield line as the Lady Cougars’ lead grew to 6-0.

That would prove to be more than enough offense for freshman right-hander Jill Wildermuth (1-2) (left) as she notched her first college win and shutout by scattering seven hits over seven inning with three strikeouts.

Offensively, Wallace went 3-for-3 with a single, double, and triple, while Hewitt and junior second baseman Kristin Kurelic each added two hits apiece with Hewitt driving in four runs with her first career home run in addition to scoring twice.

In the second game of the night, Massachusetts-Lowell strung together three hits to plate a run in the top of the third inning to break a scoreless tie and take a 1-0 lead.

Then, in the bottom of the fourth inning, MVNU answered with a two runs when Wallace and Banichar both reached with one-out singles and came around to score on a two-run double by senior shortstop Tasha Konkle to make it 2-1 in favor of the Lady Cougars.

MVNU tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Hewitt reached on an infield single with two outs and Thomas drew a walk. Wallace followed with a single to rightfield to plate Hewitt to increase the lead to 3-1.

Sophomore right-hander Meagan Brookes started and worked 2.1 innings and allowed six hits, one walk, and one run. Junior lefty Stephanie Burlew (3-1) picked up the win in relief as she worked the final 4.2 innings and allowed just three hits and two walks.

Wallace paced the offense once again by going 3-for-3, while Konkle added two hits and two RBI.

MVNU will return to action on Tuesday when the Lady Cougars will travel to Ohio Dominican University for a non-conference doubleheader that will start at 3:00 p.m.
