MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (4-28-2010) - The six seniors (below) on the Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s fastpitch softball team did their part on Senior Day as they combined for 15 hits and six RBI to complement two outstanding pitching performances as MVNU defeated Ursuline College 6-0 and 2-1 in American Mideast Conference action at Cougar Field on Wednesday afternoon.

In the first game, the Lady Cougars (15-18, 7-9 AMC) broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning when senior first baseman Michelle Gastin drove in a run with a two-out single to third to give MVNU a 1-0 lead.

The score remained that way until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Lady Cougars broke the game wide open with six hits and two errors by the Ursuline defense as MVNU built a 6-0 lead. Gastin had an RBI triple - the first of her career - and senior outfielder Lauretta Wallace followed with a run-scoring single. Senior outfielder Leslie Banichar and sophomore outfielder MacKenzie Shaw also add an RBI single each in the inning.

That was more than enough offense for freshman right-hander Jill Wildermuth (7-6) (left) as she went all seven innings and allowed just four hits and two walks with one strikeout in tossing her fourth shutout of the year.

Offensively, MVNU pounded out 15 hits in the game with the six seniors each having at least one hit for a total of 10. Gastin led the way by going 3-for-3, while Shaw was 3-for-4. Wallace and Banichar added two hits apiece.

The second game was a pitcher’s duel as each team recorded just five hits through the first six and a half innings. The Lady Arrows (10-26, 2-12 AMC) were able to scratch across one run in the top of the second inning on two-out single by Kami Weikel, and Ursuline took that 1-0 lead to the bottom of the seventh inning.

Then, with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Lady Cougars began to mount their comeback. Banichar lined her first triple of the year to right field. Senior third baseman Staci Graham followed with a bunt to pitcher Ciara Seymour to plate Banichar with the tying run and was safe at first when Seymour tried unsuccessfully to get Banichar at the plate. Junior second baseman Kristin Kurelic singled through the left side to put runners at first and second, and one out later senior shortstop Tasha Konkle lined a single up the middle to score Graham from second with the winning run as she beat the throw to the plate for a dramatic 2-1 victory.

Junior lefty Stephanie Burlew (6-5) (right) limited the Lady Arrows to just five hits, two walks, and one run over seven innings with four strikeouts to pick up the win on the mound for MVNU.

Meanwhile, Konkle went 3-for-4 to lead the Lady Cougars’ offense. Shaw also added a pair of hits.

MVNU will return to action on Thursday when the Lady Cougars travel to Urbana University for a non-conference doubleheader that will start at 3:30 p.m.
