The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University women’s fastpitch softball team
split a non-conference doubleheader with
Urbana University at Cougar Field on
Thursday afternoon as the Lady Cougars won
the first game 5-2 before dropping the
nightcap 1-0.The first game was scoreless
until the bottom of the fourth inning when
MVNU (14-14) used two hits and four errors
by the Blue Knights (19-24) to take a 4-0
lead. Freshman outfielder MacKenzie Shaw had
the only RBI of the inning for the Lady
Cougars.
Urbana
got on the scoreboard in the top of the
fifth inning with a run-scoring single by
Erica Schroeder, but MVNU got the run back
in the bottom of the fifth inning on an
RBI-double to centerfield by Lauretta
Wallace to make the score 5-1. An infield
single by Schroeder made it 5-2 in the top
of the seventh inning, but that would prove
to be as close as Urbana would get the rest
of the way.
Senior right-hander Candace White (13-9)
(left) picked up the victory
on the mound as allowed just five hits,
three walks, and two runs over seven innings
with five strikeouts.
Katie Cramer (7-13) took the loss for the
Blue Knights as she gave up eight hits and
five runs (just one earned) over five
innings with two strikeouts. Jessie
Swinderman tossed the final inning and
allowed one hit.
Junior catcher Caitlin Murphy, junior
first baseman Michelle Gastin, and sophomore
second baseman Kristin Kurelic each had two
hits to lead the Lady Cougars, while
Schroeder had two of Urbana’s five hits.
The second game started with a lead-off
double by Schroeder to leftfield. From
there, she was bunted to third and then
scored on a throwing error as the Blue
Knights took an early 1-0 lead.
That would prove to be the only run of
the game as MVNU stranded nine baserunners,
while Urbana left seven on base in the 1-0
pitchers’ duel.
Freshman right-hander Meagan Brookes
(0-3) suffered the loss for the Lady Cougars
despite allowing just four hits, two walks,
and one unearned runs over seven innings
with four strikeouts.
Tami Lasley (9-8) posted the victory for
the Blue Knights as she scattered six hits
and two walks over seven innings.
Shaw and Gastin led MVNU with two hits
apiece, while Schroeder collected half of
the Blue Knights’ four hits with a double
and a single.
The Lady Cougars will be back in action
on Friday at 3:00 p.m. when the team will
host the University of Rio Grande in an
important American Mideast Conference
doubleheader. Then, on Saturday at 11:00
a.m., MVNU will host Geneva (Pa.) College in
a best-of-three series to determine the
National Christian College Athletic
Association East Region representative. Fans
coming to Saturday’s games are encouraged to
bring canned food items that will be given
to a local food pantry as part of the
NCCAA’s outreach emphasis. The Lady Cougars
will also honor their five seniors after
Saturday's second game.
