The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University women’s fastpitch softball team
exploded for 31 hits and 25 runs in a
doubleheader sweep at Ursuline College on
Saturday afternoon as the Lady Cougars
prevailed 11-0 and 14-3 in American Mideast
Conference action. In the first game, MVNU
(13-13, 9-7 AMC) got on the scoreboard first
in the top of the second inning on an
RBI-double by senior third baseman Karly
Clay to make the score 1-0 in favor of the
Lady Cougars.
Then, in the top of the third inning,
MVNU strung together five hits to score four
times to extend the lead to 5-0. Junior
first baseman Michelle Gastin had a two-run
single, while Clay and junior outfielder
Lauretta Wallace each added an RBI-single.
The Lady Cougars blew the game wide open
in the top of the fourth inning with six
more hits that plated five more runs for a
10-0 lead. Wallace had a two-run triple to
highlight the inning, while Gastin, junior
shortstop Tasha Konkle, and senior
designated player Laura Morris also plated
one run apiece.
The final run of the game came in the top
of the fifth inning when a wild pitch and
throwing error allowed junior outfielder
Leslie Banichar to come around and score to
make it 11-0.
That would prove to be more than enough
run support for senior right-hander Candace
White (12-9) as she tossed a one-hit shutout
- her fourth shutout of the season - to lead
MVNU to the win. She worked all five innings
and allowed just a lead-off double in the
bottom of the fifth inning to Amy DiFiore
that snapped a string of 12 straight batters
who had been retired in a row to start the
game. White also struck out four and did not
issue a walk.
Ashley Hykes suffered the loss for the
Arrows (4-22, 2-8 AMC) as she surrenderd 13
hits, one walk, and 10 runs over 3.1 innings
with two strikeouts. Maria Holbert also came
in to toss the final 1.2 innings in which
she allowed two hits and one unearned run.
Freshman outfielder MacKenzie Shaw went
4-for-4 in the first game as she celebrated
her birthday in fine fashion as the lead off
hitter for the Lady Cougars. Junior catcher
Caitlin Murphy also added three hits, while
Gastin, Wallace, and Clay each finished with
two hits with Gastin and Wallace each
driving in three runs.
MVNU jumped right out to a 2-0 lead in
the second game on an RBI-triple by Banichar
and a run-scoring single by Gastin in the
top of the first inning.
This time, though, Ursuline was able to
answer as the Arrows knotted the score at
2-2 in the bottom of the first inning on an
RBI-double by Hillary Beachy and a
run-scoring single by Briana Mlady.
In the top of the third inning, the Lady
Cougars regained the lead as they strung
together five hits and took advantage of an
error to plate five runs and go in front
7-2. Wallace, Morris, and Clay each had an
RBI-double in the inning, while junior
second baseman Staci Graham added a
run-scoring single.
Jessica Meleg doubled in a run in the
bottom of the fourth inning to close the
deficit to 7-3, but MVNU put any thoughts
that the Arrows had of making a comeback to
rest in the top of the seventh inning when
the Lady Cougars sent 12 batters to the
plate and scored seven runs to extend their
lead to 14-3. Murphy and sophomore Liz
Misich both had two RBI in the inning, while
Clay, Shaw, and Banichar also drove in one
run apiece.
White notched her second win of the day
as she scattered eight hits and three runs
over six innings with three strikeouts.
Sophomore lefty Stephanie Burlew tossed the
final inning and gave up one hit.
Liz Maher took the loss for Ursuline as
she allowed 15 hits, three walk, and 13 runs
(eight earned) over 6.2 innings with one
strikeout. Holbert recorded the final out
after giving up one hit, two walks, and one
run.
Offensively, Banichar went 4-for-5 with
two RBI and three runs scored to pace the
Lady Cougars, while Shaw, Clay, and Graham
each added two hits apiece. Meanwhile,
Beachy and Sara Ilko had two hits each for
the Arrows.
The 14 runs scored in the game was the
most for MVNU since a 16-7 win over Seton
Hill (Pa.) University on April 7, 2004. The
25 combined runs scored in the doubleheader
was the highest total for an MVNU team since
April 15, 1998, when the Lady Cougars
blitzed Kenyon College 16-0 and 15-0.
MVNU will return to action on Monday when
the Lady Cougars will travel to Shawnee
State University for another AMC
doubleheader that will start at 3:00 p.m.
With four conference games remaining, MVNU
is trying to earn one of the five spots in
the AMC Tournament.
