The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University women’s fastpitch softball team
split an American Mideast Conference
doubleheader at defending NAIA Region IX
champion Walsh University as the Lady
Cougars fell 2-1 in the first game but
bounced back to take the nightcap 6-1 on
Monday afternoon.
MVNU
(10-12, 7-7 AMC) took a 1-0 lead in the top
of the third inning when the Lady Cougars
used two singles, a hit batsman, a
sacrifice, and an error by the Lady
Cavaliers (14-22, 6-4 AMC) to snap the
scoreless deadlock.
Walsh answered with a run in the bottom
of the fourth inning to knot the score at
1-1. Jessica Davidson singled to lead off
the inning and moved to second base with a
one-out stolen base. She scored from there
on an RBI-single by Erica Kreiling.
The score remained that way until the
bottom of the sixth inning when Megan Allen
hit a one-out home run for a 2-1 lead that
would prove to be the distance in the game
as the Lady Cavaliers went on to post the
one-run victory.
Senior right-hander Candace White (9-9)
(left) was the hard-luck loser
for MVNU as she allowed just five hits, one
walk, and two runs over six innings with
seven strikeouts.
Ashley Virgin (9-7) earned the win for
Walsh as she scattered seven hits, one walk,
and one unearned run over seven innings.
Offensively, sophomore second baseman
Kristin Kurelic collected two of the Lady
Cougars’ seven hits, while Davidson had two
hits for the Lady Cavaliers.
Walsh took an early 1-0 lead in the
second game as the Lady Cavaliers took
advantage of an MVNU error to plate an
unearned run on a two-out, RBI-double by
Allen.
The Lady Cougars got on the scoreboard in
the top of the second inning when an error
by Walsh allowed MVNU to knot the score at
1-1.
Then, in the top of the third inning,
junior first baseman Michelle Gastin and
junior shortstop Tasha Konkle had
back-to-back two-out, run-scoring singles to
give the Lady Cougars a 3-1 lead.
The
lead grew to 5-1 in the top of the fifth
inning on a two-run double by senior third
baseman Karly Clay, and then MVNU closed out
the scoring on an RBI-single by junior
catcher Caitlin Murphy to plate senior
outfielder Whitney Clark, who tripled to
lead off the inning, as the Lady Cougars
prevailed 6-1.
White tossed her second complete game of
the year and earned the win this time as she
allowed just five hits and one unearned run
over seven innings with six strikeouts.
Kelsey Ford (5-12) suffered the loss for
the Lady Cavaliers as she gave up 11 hits,
one walk, and six runs (four earned) over
six innings with three strikeouts. Katherine
Cannell tossed the final inning and retired
the side in order including one strikeout.
Kurlic (right) and Gastin
each had two hits apiece to pace MVNU, while
Kreiling collected two of Walsh’s five hits.
The Lady Cougars will return to action on
Thursday when MVNU will host crosstown rival
Kenyon College in a non-conference
doubleheader that will start at 4:00 p.m. at
Cougar Field. The team has also postponed
Tuesday’s scheduled AMC twinbill against the
University of Rio Grande and has rescheduled
it for April 22 at 3:00 p.m.
