The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University women’s fastpitch softball team
split an American Mideast Conference
doubleheader at Carlow (Pa.) University as
the Lady Cougars won the first game 9-0 in
six innings before falling 5-2 in the
nightcap in action at Lind Field on Saturday
afternoon.
MVNU
(9-11, 6-6 AMC) posted its third straight
shutout in the first game as senior
right-hander Candace White (8-8)
(left) limited the Celtics (6-17,
2-8 AMC) to just four hits in the game.
White struck out eight batters over six
innings with no walks in notching her third
shutout of the season.
Meanwhile, the Lady Cougars’ offense was
busy pounding out 14 hits. MVNU got on the
scoreboard in the top of the second inning
when junior shortstop Tasha Konkle plated
the first run of the game with an RBI-double
for a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Cougars increased the lead to
4-0 in the top of the fourth inning when two
errors by Carlow contributed to two of the
three runs being unearned. Konkle had a
run-scoring single, while sophomore second
baseman Kristin Kurelic also had an
RBI-single.
MVNU closed out the scoring with five
runs in the top of the sixth inning as the
eight-run mercy rule went into effect after
the bottom of the sixth inning as the Lady
Cougars prevailed 9-0. MVNU had seven hits
in the inning with junior catcher Caitlin
Murphy registering a two-run single, junior
first baseman Michelle Gastin recording a
two-run double, and junior outfielder Leslie
Banichar coming through with an RBI-single.
Kurelic, Murphy, Gastin, Konkle, and
senior third baseman Karly Clay each had two
hits apiece with Murphy, Gastin, and Konkle
each driving in two runs. Meanwhile, Alyssa
Capatolla had the lone extra base hit for
Carlow with a double.
MVNU
had its 20-inning scoreless streak snapped
in the bottom of the first inning in the
second game when the Celtics sent 10 batters
to the plate and scored five unearned runs
as the result of three errors by the Lady
Cougars. The first two runs came without the
ball ever leaving the infield, and then
Sarah D’Urzo launched a three-run homer to
rightfield as Carlow built a 5-0 lead.
The score remained that way until the top
of the sixth inning when MVNU was able to
close the gap to 5-2 on a two-run home run
by Banichar (right) - the
second round-tripper of the season for her.
However, that would be as close as the Lady
Cougars would get despite out-hitting the
Celtics 10-7 for the game.
Freshman right-hander Meagan Brookes
(0-2) suffered the loss for MVNU as she
recorded just one out while giving up four
hits and five unearned runs. White came on
to pitch 5.2 innings and allowed just three
hits and one walk with five strikeouts to
give the Lady Cougars a chance.
Samantha Binkiewicz earned the win for
Carlow as she scattered nine hits and two
runs over six innings with one strikeout.
Baughman notched a save by tossing the final
inning and allowing just one hit.
Kurelic, Gastin, and Konkle each had two
hits to lead MVNU, while Katie Summerhill
and Ashley Scanga had two hits apiece for
the Celtics.
The Lady Cougars will return to action on
Monday at 3:00 p.m. when MVNU will travel to
Walsh University for another AMC
doubleheader that was originally scheduled
for last Friday.
