The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University women’s fastpitch softball team
capped off a successful spring trip as the
Lady Cougars notched two more wins on Friday
at the Orlando Rebel Games with a 4-3
come-from-behind win over Geneseo (N.Y.)
University and a 6-3 victory over Spring
Arbor (Mich.) University.
In
the first game of the day, Geneseo (2-5)
scored a run in the top of the first inning
on a wild pitch and added another run in the
top of the second inning as an error
prolonged the inning for Katie Holm to line
a two-out double to extend the lead to 2-0.
MVNU (7-3) finally got on the scoreboard
in the bottom of the fifth inning when
sophomore outfielder Leslie Banichar
(left) lined a two-out, two-run
double to centerfield to knot the score at
2-2.
After Geneseo regained the lead 3-2 in
the top of the sixth inning on an RBI-single
by Liz Squairs, junior third baseman Karly
Clay tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of
the sixth inning with a run-scoring single
to right.
Then, in the bottom of the seventh
inning, sophomore shortstop Tasha Konkle
singled and stole second. After Banichar
walked, sophomore catcher Caitlin Murphy
gave the Lady Cougars a 4-3 walk-off win
with a single to center to plate Konkle with
the winning run.
Freshman
lefty Stephanie Burlew started and worked
two innings and allowed two hits, one walk,
and two runs with one strikeout for MVNU.
Junior right-hander Candace White
(right) (3-2) picked up the win in
relief as she tossed the final five innings
and scattered six hits, one walk, and one
run with three strikeouts.
Kerry Kuhn started and worked five
innings and gave up three hits, one walk,
and two unearned runs with five strikeouts
for Geneseo. Lindsay Norton took the loss in
relief as she allowed four hits, one walk,
and two runs in 1.1 innings with one
strikeout.
Clay paced the Lady Cougars’ offense by
going 2-for-3, while Squairs and Kristen
Newton were both 2-for-3 for Geneseo.
MVNU jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in
the top of the first inning of the second
game against Spring Arbor (4-8). Sophomore
designated player Staci Graham lined a
triple to centerfield to drive in the first
run and sophomore first baseman Michelle
Gastin followed with a single to right to
plate Graham.
Spring Arbor cut the deficit in half in
the bottom of the third inning when Danielle
Beckett made it 2-1 with a two-out,
run-scoring single.
However, the Lady Cougars answered with
three runs in the top of the fourth inning
to build their lead to 5-1. Freshman second
baseman Kristin Kurelic drove in the first
run with a bases-loaded infield single,
Konkle followed with an RBI-single, and
Kurelic came in on a wild pitch.
A
sacrifice fly by Autumn Palik made it 5-2 in
the bottom of the fifth inning, but Banichar
hit a sacrifice fly of her own to push the
lead back to 6-2 in the top of the sixth
inning. Spring Arbor closed out the scoring
in the bottom of the sixth inning with a
two-out, bases-loaded infield single as MVNU
held on for the 6-3 win.
Senior right-hander Kristin Eyerman (4-0)
started and earned the win as she scattered
10 hits, four walks, and three runs over six
innings with four strikeouts. White notched
her first save of the year with one
scoreless inning in which she allowed just
one hit with one strikeout.
Chelsea Branchean (2-3) took the loss for
Spring Arbor as she gave up seven hits, four
walks, two hit batters, and six runs (only
two earned) over seven innings with two
strikeouts.
Gastin (left) finished
2-for-2 for the game to lead the Lady
Cougars, while Graham also had two hits.
Beckett, Jenna Titler, and Ashley Boland
each had two hits for Spring Arbor.
MVNU will now return north and will be
back in action on Wednesday when the Lady
Cougars will play a non-conference
doubleheader at Wilmington College. The
first game will start at 3:30 p.m.
