The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University women’s fastpitch softball team
managed just five hits on the day as the
Lady Cougars dropped a pair of games at the
Orlando Rebel Games on Tuesday afternoon as
MVNU fell 4-1 to Carthage (Wis.) College and
2-0 to Loras (Iowa) College.
In
the game against Carthage, the Lady Cougars
(3-3) managed just two hits. Sophomore
shortstop Tasha Konkle (left)
led off the game with a single, and
sophomore outfielder Lauretta Wallace had a
lead-off single in the top of the sixth
inning.
Despite just recording two hits, MVNU
still had plenty of scoring chances as the
Lady Cougars drew seven walks in the game.
However, MVNU stranded 11 base runners in
falling 4-1. Meanwhile, Jacqelyn Tassone
paced Carthage by going 3-for-3 with a home
run, and Kari Peterson added two hits.
Junior right-hander Candace White (1-2)
suffered the loss as she allowed six hits,
one walk, and four runs over six innings
with seven strikeouts.
Allie Benthusen (1-2) picked up the
victory for Carthage (3-3) as she scattered
two hits, six walks, and one unearned run
over five innings with six strikeouts.
Kelsey Epping notched a save by tossing two
scoreless innings with one walk and three
strikeouts.
In the second game, Loras (5-3) jumped
out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the
first inning with a double and two singles.
That
would prove to be all the scoring in the
game as the two teams combined for just five
hits the rest of the way. Sophomore first
baseman Michelle Gastin (right)
had two hits for MVNU, while Konkle added a
single.
Freshman lefty Stephanie Burlew (0-1)
made her college debut on the mound as she
started and allowed just five hits, one hit
batter, and two runs over four innings with
one strikeout. Senior right-hander Kristin
Eyerman tossed the final three scoreless
innings and struck out three batters.
Kate Earleywine picked up the win for
Loras as she tossed a three-hit shutout with
no walks and four strikeouts in seven
innings of work.
After an off-day on Wednesday, the Lady
Cougars will return to action on Thursday
with a 3:00 p.m. game against Utica (N.Y.)
College and a 5:00 p.m. contest against
Macalester (Minn.) College.
