For the fifth time in five
games against Ohio Dominican University this
season, the Mount Vernon Nazarene University
women’s fastpitch softball team dropped a
one-run decision to the Lady Panthers as the
Lady Cougars fell 3-2 on Wednesday in the
first round of the NAIA Region IX Tournament
hosted by Walsh University.Ohio Dominican
(22-28) used three straight hits in the
bottom of the first inning as the No. 4
seeded Lady Panthers wasted no time in
taking a 1-0 lead on an RBI-single by
Katalin Beck.
The
lead grew to 3-0 in the bottom of the second
inning for Ohio Dominican as Jessica Carey’s
two-out, two-run single plated both Sarah
Burt and Sarah Rante.
MVNU (23-19), the No. 5 seed, finally got
on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth
inning when sophomore outfielder Lauretta
Wallace (left) led off the
inning with a solo home run to rightfield -
her third of the season - to pull the Lady
Cougars within 3-1. The hit also broke up
the no-hit bid for the Lady Panthers.
MVNU closed the gap to 3-2 in the top of
the sixth inning when with two outs
sophomore catcher Caitlin Murphy doubled to
left center to plate freshman second baseman
Kristin Kurelic.
Then, in the top of the seventh inning,
the Lady Cougars had another shot tie or
take the lead as junior third baseman Karly
Clay just missed hitting a home run when her
double down the leftfield line came up about
six inches from going over the fence.
Sophomore first baseman Michelle Gastin was
hit by a pitch and a wild pitch moved
runners to second and third with two outs.
However, that would be as close as MVNU
would get as Ohio Dominican held on for the
3-2 victory to advance in the winner’s
bracket.
Senior right-hander Kristin Eyerman
(12-7) suffered the loss for the Lady
Cougars as she gave up six hits, two walks,
and three runs over six innings with three
strikeouts.
Petra
Jones earned the win for the Lady Panthers
as she allowed just four hits, three walks,
and two runs with four strikeouts.
Clay (right) finished with
two hits to lead MVNU as the Lady Cougars
collected just four hits and three of them
went for extra bases. Amanda Ritzler’s
double was the only extra base hit for Ohio
Dominican.
MVNU will now face No. 6 seed Point Park
(Pa.) University (16-19) in the loser’s
bracket on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. The winner
will take on the winner of the game between
No. 2 University of Rio Grande and Ohio
Dominican on Thursday at 3:00 p.m.
