MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (4-12-2008) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s fastpitch softball team took both games of an American Mideast Conference South Division doubleheader from Cedarville University on Saturday afternoon by the scores of 8-0 and 6-4 as the Lady Cougars remained unbeaten at Cougar Field this year.

The first game was scoreless until the bottom of the third inning when MVNU (16-8, 7-5 AMC South) used three hits and an error to take a 2-0 lead. Sophomore shortstop Tasha Konkle (left) and sophomore outfielder Leslie Banichar both had RBI-singles in the inning.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Lady Cougars sent 11 batters to the plate as MVNU scored six runs with five of them being unearned as the result of two errors. Sophomore outfielder Lauretta Wallace, Banichar, and Konkle each had an RBI-double in the inning, while freshman second baseman Kristin Kurelic, sophomore designated player Staci Graham, and sophomore catcher Caitlin Murphy added a run-scoring single apiece as the Lady Cougars’ lead grew to 8-0.

That was more than enough run support for junior right-hander Candace White (8-5) as she allowed just three hits over five innings in posting her third shutout of the season and her second of the week. She struck out four batters and did not issue a walk.

Mallory White (9-7) took the loss for Cedarville as she gave up 11 hits, one walk, and eight runs over four innings. Only two of the runs were earned as the result of three errors by the Lady Jackets (13-17, 3-9 AMC South).

Konkle, Banichar, Graham, Murphy, and Wallace each had two hits apiece as MVNU collected 11 hits in the game. Sara Koepke had Cedarville’s only extra base hit with a one-out triple in the top of the first inning.

The Lady Jackets bounced back in the second game as Cedarville scored single runs in each of the first three innings to build an early 3-0 lead. Aubree Munson had an RBI-single in the first inning, Sarah Hoffman ripped a run-scoring double in the second inning, and Munson added an RBI-triple in the third inning.

The Lady Cougars finally got their offense going in the bottom of the third inning as MVNU once again put together a six-run inning for the second time on the day to move in front 6-3. Junior third baseman Karly Clay and Wallace (right) both had two-run singles in the inning, while Banichar and junior first baseman Kylie Rupert added an RBI-single apiece as the Lady Cougars sent 11 batters to the plate.

The Lady Jackets tacked on an unearned run in the top of the fourth inning to close the gap to 6-4. Jessica Reyes lined a two-out triple to right center to plate Hoffman, who had reached on an error.

That would prove to be all the scoring in the game, though, as MVNU prevailed 6-4 to post the doubleheader sweep and avenge a pair of loss at Cedarville on Thursday. The win also improved the team's record at Cougar Field to 6-0 on the season.

Senior right-hander Kristin Eyerman started and gave up four hits and two runs over two innings with one strikeout for the Lady Cougars. Candace White (left) came one in relief and picked up the win - her second of the day - as she allowed four hits and two runs (one earned) over five innings with three strikeouts.

Sarah Harnica (4-8) took the loss for the Lady Jackets as she allowed seven hits, two walks, and six runs over 2.2 innings with two strikeouts. Mallory White tossed the final 3.1 innings and gave up just two hits with two strikeouts.

Banichar and junior outfielder Whitney Clark both had two hits apiece to lead the MVNU offensive attack. Meanwhile, Reyes, Munson, and Andrea Walker each had two hits for Cedarville.

The Lady Cougars will return to action on Tuesday when MVNU will travel to Ohio Dominican University for another AMC South Division doubleheader that will get under way at 3:00 p.m.
