GOSHEN, Ind. (1-17-2012) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men's basketball team dug itself a big hole in the first half and the 18-point deficit proved to be too much despite a valiant second-half comeback attempt as the Cougars fell 77-62 at Goshen (Ind.) College in Mid-Central College Conference action on Tuesday night.

MVNU (8-13, 2-7 MCC) actually held a 9-8 lead after the first five minutes as senior guard Robbie Taylor scored the Cougars' first five points and sophomore post Caleb Williams and junior forward Zach Zeltman each added a basket.

MVNU went the next 3:18 without scoring as the host Maple Leafs (15-6, 5-4 MCC) 13 straight points to take a 21-9 lead. Another 10-4 run by Goshen followed the Cougars found themselves trailing 31-13 with 8:39 still to play in the first half.

MVNU was unable to pull any closer than 12 points the rest of the first half, and the Cougars went to the locker room at the break trailing 43-28.

Taylor led MVNU with nine first-half points, while Williams added eight points and senior forward Danil Zakhlebnyy tossed in seven points. The Cougars shot just 33.3 percent from the field (8-for-24), 28.6 percent from 3-point range (2-for-7), and made all 10 of their free throw attempts. MVNU also turned the ball over 12 times in the first half.

Geoffry Gilot paced the Maple Leafs with nine points and four rebounds in the first half, while Matthew Martin and Kody Chandler added six points each. Goshen shot 50 percent from the field (15-for-30), 28.6 percent from 3-point range (4-for-14), and 81.8 percent from the free throw line (9-for-11).

The Cougars roared out of the locker room to start the second half as MVNU used a 22-11 run to close the gap to 54-50 by the 10:51 mark. Williams led the surge with eight points, while Zakhlebnyy and Taylor added five points apiece.

That would be as close as the Cougars would get the rest of the way, though, as the Maple Leafs answered with an 8-1 run to push their lead back to 62-51 with 9:08 to go. MVNU was able to pull within nine points on four occasions the rest of the way, but the Cougars made just one field goal over the final 5:25 as Goshen pulled away for the 77-62 victory.

Taylor and Williams each scored 16 points to pace MVNU, while Zakhlebnyy added 15 points. However, the rest of the team only combined to add 15 points. The Cougars shot 40 percent from the field (18-for-45), 35.7 percent from 3-point range (5-for-14), and 87.5 percent from the free throw line (21-for-24). MVNU committed 21 turnovers in the game and was out-rebounded 34-24.

Martin, Gilot, and Kyle Davis all scored 14 points apiece to lead the Maple Leafs, while Chandler added 11 points. Goshen shot 50 percent from the field (26-for-52), 23.8 percent from 3-point range (5-for-21), and 71.4 percent from the free throw line (20-for-28).

The Cougars will look to bounce back on Saturday at 3 p.m. when MVNU will travel to Grace (Ind.) College for another MCC contest. The Lancers (17-3, 7-2 MCC), who are ranked No. 5 in the latest NAIA Division II poll, are coming off 66-57 loss at Marian (Ind.) University on Tuesday night. They defeated the Cougars 91-69 back on November 22 at MVNU.
